The Suzuki Ignis is about to go on sale. It may be noted that the Ignis made its India debut at the Auto Expo 2016, where it shared floor space with the upcoming Baleno RS. The Ignis moniker becomes the second nameplate after the ‘Baleno‘ to make a comeback. The earlier iteration of the Ignis used to be on sale in Europe, Australia, and some Asian markets. The new Suzuki Ignis too will target the same markets. However, this Maruti Suzuki Mini SUV is also India bound! Camouflaged units of the Ignis micro-SUV were caught testing on Delhi roads recently. The Maruti Ignis price range will be INR 5.25-8 Lakhs. Read on to find more on Maruti Ignis Price in India, launch date and specifications of the upcoming Maruti Mini SUV 2016-17.

Maruti Ignis India Launch Date

Maruti Ignis India Launch Date January-February 2017

The launch date of Maruti Suzuki Ignis compact SUV will probably fall in early 2017. At the Auto Expo 2016, where the Ignis was first showcased to the Indian public, Maruti announced that the Ignis will be sold through the Nexa dealer network. This indicates that it will be a premium offering and the variants will have the same variant names as the S-Cross and Baleno – Sigma, Alpha, Delta, Zeta.

At the Auto Expo, Maruti announced that the Ignis and the Baleno RS will arrive in showrooms during the 2016 festive season. However, both launches are now running behind schedule. A major reason for that is the high demand for other Maruti products such as the Baleno and Brezza. Maruti is struggling to cope with the demand for its new products. Maruti delayed the launch in order to give themselves enough time to clear some of the backlog.

Maruti Ignis India Rivals

The only direct rival to the Ignis currently on sale in India is Mahindra’s KUV100. However, on the basis of the Maruti Ignis’ price, its siblings such as the Swift, Baleno and Vitara Brezza could turn out to be indirect rivals as well.

Maruti could also provide an option of Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT). India-spec model will boast an FF layout. In an interesting and rather surprising move, Maruti could offer the Ignis with an All-Wheel Drive system as well. There have been reports of the SHVS Mild Hybrid Tech finding its way to the Maruti Ignis. That could help Maruti claim a mileage of more than 28 kpl!

New-generation platform

The new generation platform underpinning the Ignis has been tailor-made to enhance the rigidity of the car’s structure. Not just this, it also reduces weight by means of a fundamental re-design of the car’s underbody structure. The new platform also helps to optimize the overall vehicle design, which also comprises of parts mounted under the body. Maruti Ignis Design Review

The Suzuki Ignis was first unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. It is among the newest of Suzuki’s ideas for the compact SUV and crossover segments. The Ignis previews the manufacturer’s upcoming compact 4×4 and the car’s design boasts of uniqueness and Suzuki’s DNA. The car’s theme is “Shape the Inspiration”. Basically, the upcoming Maruti Ignis is a highly personal vehicle that opens gates to new possibilities to have fun. In words of Suzuki, the Ignis is “intelligent but tough, offering reliable performance rooted in the Suzuki 4×4 tradition coupled with the latest fuel-saving technology. The minimalist design blends perfectly into the driver’s lifestyle, while its distinctive character brings real inspiration to the daily routine.”

The Ignis will have a high ground clearance and a high hip point. It might also get a 4WD system. All of this will ensure that this car is easy to drive in tough road conditions. On the inside, it has a user-friendly interior and a large luggage area. The car’s minimalist body boasts plain surfaces and a round-ish roof, with straight lines that make the design more attractive. The large wheels, pushed to the corners of the vehicle, go on to hint at this SUV’s muscular performance and give it a dynamic stance. Then there are some more dramatic design features such as the ‘sunglass clad’ look of the front fascia, helmet like roof and the vents on the C Pillar, which are inspired by older models from Suzuki.

Maruti Ignis India – Exterior

Maruti Ignis Price - 5.00 Lakh - Launch Date, Specs, Images maruti ignis led headlamps

The new Suzuki Ignis looks much like the iM4 concept previewed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The Suzuki Ignis measures 3679mm in length, 1579mm in height and is 1478mm wide. It gets really bold arches, sporty bumpers, some chrome accents, large wheels and an overall boxy silhouette. In India, the Ignis will compete with the Mahindra KUV100 and upcoming models such as the Chevrolet Beat Activ and Tata Tiago Aktiv.

Maruti Ignis India – Features

  • Capsule like, minimalist body
  • Curved roof and plain surfaces that create a high visual impact and give the car body a simple yet endearing character
  • Straight lines of the car’s shoulder and greenhouse enhance the visual impact, as do the many rectangular motifs that have been repeated at many places like front and rear lower grilles, outside rear view mirrors, door handles, and headlamps.
  • Sunglass like front grille and headlamp design
  • Blacked out A and B pillars
  • Clamshell bonnet
  • Slits on C pillar pay tribute to earlier Suzuki models such as Fronte Coupé and the first generation Cervo
  • Flared bumpers
  • Stylish 18 inch wheels
  • Black alloy wheels
  • Side body moulding to enhance the rugged image
  • Car Play Infotainment
  • 5-speed AMT
  • LED daytime running lamps

Maruti Ignis India – Interior

maruti ignis price around 5.25 lakhs; india launch in October 2016; Interior image of dashboard-centre-console

On the inside, the Ignis gets a combination of light and dark surfaces. Its dashboard design is unlike anything we have seen from Maruti Suzuki till date. Since it will be sold through the Nexa sales network, the Ignis will get a slew of premium features. The Ignis will feature Maruti’s SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system. This system features a special HMI (Human Machine Interface), smartphone connectivity and navigation features. It also boasts Apple CarPlay and voice-recognition function. In India, however, the Ignis might borrow the SmartPlay infotainment system currently available on Baleno, Ciaz and Vitara Brezza. All this will take the Maruti Ignis price to above 7 lakhs but only for the fully loaded models.

Maruti Ignis Engine and Transmission

In all probability, the upcoming Ignis will share its engines with the Baleno/Swift/Dzire. It will get a 1.2 litre petrol and a 1.3 litre diesel. Interestingly, the 1.3 litre diesel will benefit from mild hybrid tech similar to what we have seen in the Ciaz and Ertiga SHVS models. Manual transmission variants will get a 5 speed gearbox. Maruti was expected to launch the Ignis with an optional CVT gearbox. However, recent reports suggest Maruti will equip the Ignis with a 5-speed AMT instead of a CVT to keep costs competitive. Also, Suzuki’s global website also lists the Ignis with a 5-speed AMT and not a CVT. Maruti is yet to confirm the engine and transmission lineup.

Use of SHVS mild hybrid tech means the Ignis will be eligible for concessions under the Government’s FAME scheme. This could bring down the price of diesel variants further.

Maruti Ignis Safety

The India-bound Ignis has received a 3-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. With the optional full safety pack, the Ignis secures a full 5-star rating. It maybe noted that both the variants tested featured 6 airbags. In most likelihood, the Indian version will receive just two airbags. Euro NCAP notes that the Ignis’ cabin remained stable in offset deformable front impact crash test. Also, the test dummy indicated that passengers are likely to remain largely unscathed in case of a mishap.

The India-spec Ignis will come with following safety features-

  • Dual Front Airbags
  • ABS with EBD
  • Security Alarm
  • Seatbelt with pre-tensioners
  • Fog Lamps
  • Crumple Zones

  11. I am Impressed with Vitara Design since Available in Diesel Only my Usage only 400 KM in a Month , Should I Wait for Vitara Petrol Version Experts Pls Suggest.

  12. Yes, the Vitara Petrol should be out by the end of the current financial year. Waiting could be a good idea if you don’t require a new car at the earliest.

    Regards

  14. The concept car looks good. By the time it gets modified and comes to Indian market. It might look like a piece of crap.

  15. Have to be said – the rear of the car is hideous to say the least!!! Rest of the car, great clean design. Freshness abound in the interiors. The front and the interiors look inspired by the VW UP! but that’s not a bad thing at all!

  16. What shall be the cost of ownership for 5 years for petrol & diesal variants if monthly running is about 1000 kms. Thanks

  17. Why is Alpha Suv is waiting such a beautiful model which people are waiting for ? Since Murathi is having biggest shares in the market. Why can’t Maruti give best car with lowest price where people are offeredable ?….

  18. Ignis… Ignis…..Ignis…… Waiting for such a long period is getting irritation…… No clarity on launch, some one saying on or after festival… Another one saying in 2017…..
Will you pl clarify on launch?

  19. May i know which will be better among tata nexon and maruti ignis? My requirements are good ground clearance atleast 190mm as i stay in hilly area of sikkim. Preferably 4 cylinder engine, good boot volume and spacious 5 seats. 3 cylinder suvs arent a good taste for hilly regions

  20. Hi Puran,
Both of these haven’t been launched yet so we can’t be too sure before driving them. But from the looks of it, the Ignis will meet all your requirements. The Nexon is still some time away from launch and hence, finer details are unavailable at the moment.

    Regards
