Ford Figo is the new small car which is selling like hot cakes and giving Ford a real good sales figure for its operations in India. Another small wonder is in this Rs. 3.5 Lakh to Rs. 4.5 Lakh bracket is Chevrolet Beat which is also working as a trump cars for Chevrolet in India. To strengthen its hold and save its market share in this segment, Maruti Suzuki has recently launched its New Maruti Wagon R with improved BS4 engine, better mileage, better looks, more comfort and improved interiors.

New Wagon R Vs Ford Figo

I have recently compared New Maruti Wagon R Vs Chevrolet Beat. In this article I will compare Maruti New Wagon R with Ford Figo Petrol as they both lie in the similar price bracket and cater the similar segment of commuting needs.

New Wagon R Vs Ford Figo Exterior Styling

When it comes to exterior styling, these cars are contrast to each other with one being a tall-boy design and other being close to a wide jelly-bean shaped hatchback. Both have a visual appeal of their own and stylish in their own way. The front looks of Ford Figo are better in aesthetics compared to to new Wagon R, but from Side and rear, the Wagon R looks more attractive. The styling of both the cars are soothing and good looking. The Figo looks more aero-dynamic and free-flowing and is more pleasing to eyes compared to Wagon R.

If I have to pick one, I would pick Figo because I like wider cars more as compared to taller cars, but a tall person may like otherwise.

New Wagon R Dimensions :

Length = 3595mm ; Width = 1495mm; Height = 1700mm;

Ford Figo Dimensions :

Length = 3795mm; Width = 1680mm;  Height = 1453mm;

Figo is taller, wider and less high as compared to the Wagon R. If you are tall and feel uncomfortable in normal-height cars, you may like the tall-boy design of Wagon R more appealing and comfortable.

New Wagon R Engine Vs Ford Figo Petrol Engine

Engine Specifications of New Wagon R:

  • 4 Cylinder Water Cooled KB Series Engine
  • 998 CC MPFI Engine
  • Max Power – 67 BHP @ 6200 RPM
  • Max Torque – 90 Nm @ 3500 RPM
  • 5 Speed Manual transmission

Engine Specifications of Ford Figo Petrol:

  • 4 Cylinder Water Cooled Engine
  • 1196 CC MPFI Engine
  • Max Power – 71 BHP @ 6250 RPM
  • Max Torque – 102 Nm @ 4000 RPM
  • 5 Speed Manual transmission

Considering the engine displacement and power output Wagon R looks a better bet with 67 BHP output with a 1 Litre engine compared to 71 BHP output of 1.2 Litre ford engine. Considering the max torque delivery RPM, here again Maruti Wagon R beats Ford engine. Also being smaller in displacement, the Wagon R engine is expected to deliver a better fuel mileage compared to that of Ford Figo.

From engine perspective, my vote goes to the Maruti Wagon R as there is not much difference in power of the two.

New Wagon R Interiors Vs Ford Figo Interiors

The dual tone interiors of New Wagon R look more classy and elegant as compared to the Ford Figo. The height and rear-leg space is much better in the Wagon R compared to Figo. Dashboard and steering wheel design are more attractive in Wagon R.

Ford Figo Interiors are not as attractive as the Wagon R, but the width of the car sets it apart in comfort level and elbow room when compared with the Wagon R. The seat fabric and Dashboard are in dual-tone, but the plastic quality is not-so-high.

In terms of looks, I will prefer Wagon R, but in case of elbow room Figo is a better deal. Also tall people will feel more comfortable in Wagon R because of high head space.

New Wagon R Price Vs Ford Figo Petrol Price

The price of Ford Figo is slightly on the higher side when compared with the Wagon R, although the difference is not considerably high, but Indian consumers always want more value for money with their purchases.

Cost Of New Wagon R In Delhi (Ex-Showroom)

  • Price Of New Wagon R Lx is Rs. 3.28 Lakhs
  • Price Of New Wagon R Lxi is Rs. 3.57 Lakhs
  • Price Of New Wagon R Vxi is Rs. 3.81 Lakhs
  • Price Of New Wagon R Vxi with ABS is Rs. 4.12 Lakhs

Cost Of Ford Figo Petrol In Delhi (Ex-Showroom)

  • Price of Ford Figo 1.2L Duratec LXi is Rs. 3.5 Lakhs
  • Price of Ford Figo 1.2L Duratec EXi is Rs. 3.82 Lakhs
  • Price of Ford Figo 1.2L Duratec ZXi is Rs. 3.99 Lakhs
  • Price of Ford Figo 1.2L Duratec Titanium is Rs. 4.42 Lakhs

Considering the lack of features like rear power windows and electrically adjustable outside rear-view mirrors, Ford Figo seems pricier compared to the Wagon R. So in terms of Price also, Wagon R comes up as better the deal.

Ford Figo After Sales Service Vs Maruti Wagon R After Sales Service

Maruti Suzuki has the strongest nationwide service network and this gives an edge to Maruti Wagon R in terms of after-sales service. Ford is present in all major cities and towns, but not as extensively as Maruti.

Car Blog India verdict – New Wagon R Vs Ford Figo

My vote goes Maruti Wagon R because of its better engine performance, better mileage and looks. Ford Figo may be a better pick if you are looking for a comfortable seating of 3 passengers at the rear because its wider than Wagon R, but if you rarely have 3 passengers at rear, Maruti Wagon R is the car.

Despite the detailed info, this can be quite a difficult choice.

I own wagonr lxi. It sucks on indian highways as there are little path holes and irregular surface levels. I do not trust the lower capacity engine whatever maruti claims about the bhp power. 1200cc engine is always superior to 1000cc. Even stability and ride quality of wagon r on highway is never impressive. It begin rattling after 1 year.

I own a Wagon R and when I bought it I compared it throughly with Santro and other cars. But I feel they humiliated all the old wagon R owners with a very poor interior and cheap palstics. Any way its a different story now. I wish I had a choice of Figo then. I feel Figo will be a better choice than Wagon R in brand name, comfort, engine power and the class it offers. The new Wagon R is stylish in its own and it has a betterhight but the old mistakes are not eaily forgiven. Now some people spread a rumour against the Ford that the maintainace is costly, But is there a single customer who havent paid an average atleast Rs.5000 on every 5000 Kms at their service centers. I dont think Figo will extract more than this, I have never owned a Ford though.

hi… i think authour is wrong in saying that the plastic quality of figo is poor . it is poorest for wagon r… its just a crual joke from maruti to deliver a low grade product to indian customers in the name of economy and affordable pricing.

  5. [...] The pricing of both the cars is nearby and they both fall in same bracket but the styling differs drastically. In this post I will compare Engine, Design, Exteriors, Interiors of both the cars so that you can better decide between the two cars. I have also recently compared Maruti Wagon R Vs Ford Figo Petrol. Hi Mr. Joshi,
Have you bought Factory fitted CNG Lxi. I am looking for review(like tank to tank mileage, powerdrop if any) but nowhere I got it, If you can provide, will be great help. Thanks,
    Raj.

Considering the traffic chaos and stability if you want to take a drive, FIGO is a good decision to buy. If your purpose is drive nearby then Wagon R is better. Mileage of 1 to 3 km is not a big difference. FIGO is a better choice for Indians as they have a family and usually 3 travel at rear. Wagon R is cramped. I have both the cars with me.

New wagon r engine is only 3-cylinders and not 4-cylinders. I bought wagon r LXI 1 year back and have driven more than 17000 kms. It has poor suspension, bad handling, poor stability specially on highway. It struggles little to touch 100km/hour and takes long time. You would feel need of more power. Even in city carrying 4 passengers it is no fun to drive.

    Guys,

I own 2 cars both wagon R and ford figo petrol. I am not a expect in tech specifications. I own wagon r from past 6 years and bought new ford figo petrol exi model and very much pleased with the figo’s performance it has great comfort and good suspension and its absolute pleasure to ride figo. on highway I got 16 km/lt and 14 km/lt on city conditions. and I feel wagon r plastics are much cheaper then figo.

Thanks ford for the great car
