3. Maruti Alto 800 – 24.7 kpl

The best selling car in India is also one of the most fuel efficient petrol cars in India. The recent updates have moved it up the list and it now sits above the Alto K10 and Celerio, second only to the Kwid/redi-GO. As part of the update, the Alto 800 also got a new nose and a slight price cut to counter the Kwid and redi-GO’s threat. Powering the Alto 800 is a 796cc petrol motor which produces 47.3 bhp and 69 Nm torque. Maruti has tried its best to add some flair to the exteriors and while it doesn’t look bad for a car its price, most people will not be buying it for its looks.

4. Maruti Alto K10 – 24.07 kpl

The launch of the Datsun redi-GO and the updated Alto 800 has pushed the Alto K10 down a couple of spots on our list of the most fuel efficient petrol cars in India. Based on the Alto 800, the K10 packs a bigger, 1.0 litre K-Series motor which  makes 67 bhp and 90 Nm torque. The Maruti Alto K10 can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT, both of which have the same mileage rating. The exteriors might not be as appealing as the previous iteration, but the interiors are certainly a better place to be in.

6. Tata Nano GenX – 23.6 kpl

In sixth place, albeit by a very small margin, is the Tata Nano. It received a major update in 2015 in the form of the Nano GenX. Powered by the smallest internal combustion employed by a passenger car in India, the Nano manages to return and impressive 23.6 kpl under ARAI test conditions. Tata has transformed the Nano into a much better buy in its latest GenX guise. The A-segment hatch now gets an optional AMT automatic, openable hatch and refreshed exteriors. The small capacity 624cc petrol motor produces 37.5 bhp and 51 Nm torque mated to a 4-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.

7. Maruti Celerio – 23.1 kpl

The car which made automatics accessible to the masses is also one of the most fuel efficient cars in India right now at a rated fuel economy of 23.1 kpl. It was developed by Maruti Suzuki to replace the A-Star and the Estilo. The Celerio has done well since its launch in India with the AMT equipped model performing pretty well in the market too. It is powered by the same engine as the Alto K10. This 998cc petrol produces 67 bhp and 90 Nm. Like the Alto K10, the mating of the AMT to the engine has not led to a compromise in mileage.

On the inside, the Eon is in a class of its own with high-quality interiors which look like they belong to a model a few segments higher. Powering the Eon are 814cc and 998cc petrol motors. They produce 55 bhp and 68 bhp respectively. The latter returns a mileage of 20.3 kpl.
