A while back we came to know about Chevrolet Volt hybrid car catching fire three weeks after routine crash tests. US federal authorities immediately started investing the matter to figure out the loop holes in handling and safety of lithium ion batteries. The agency NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) questioned each of the leading electric vehicle manufacturers to put in their suggestion to further mitigate such risks. In defense, General Motors quickly responded saying Volt is a safe car but now the latest news is that the Chevrolet is going to redesign the battery pack. image- Chevrolet Volt Alongside the company is cooperating with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its investigation and also reassures its 6400 Volt owners. Although the company is quite confident about its battery, CEO Dan Ackerson announced that it will redesign the battery pack of Chevrolet Volt and will buy back Volts from owners concerned that the car might catch fire and will also recall the cars to carry out necessary repairs and modifications. Ackerson said, “If we find that is the solution, we will retrofit every one of them,” He added “We just want make sure that there are protocols post-crash. We want to [...]
Chevrolet Volt Electric Car’s Battery Pack To Be Redesigned After Reported Fire Accidents is a post from: CarBlogIndia - All About Automobiles. All Rights Reserved. Copyright Policy

Electric vehicles are the next big thing in the auto industry and are growing at a satisfactory pace. Yesterday we had covered Honda EV-STER which is a new small electric sports car concept from the major and today another news comes floating over the internet under the same category. Suzuki, another Japanese major, is planning to introduce electric cars in India under the brand name Maruti Suzuki. They know it well that the current infrastructure is not supportive enough for electric cars but since the government and other companies are helping promote the same, the scenario is expected to change soon. As of now only Mahindra REVA sells pure electric cars in India. A couple of Hybrid cars such as Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius were also launched, but owing to the high pricing they could not attract enough buyers. In fact the Prius got an appreciable response whereas the Civic came as a great disappointment. One of the Suzuki official said, “Even in CNG models, there is limitation in the number of gas stations. So it is more difficult to introduce electric vehicles in India, but we will introduce at the right time and it is under consideration,” [...]
Maruti Suzuki Electric Cars To Come Soon In India is a post from: CarBlogIndia - All About Automobiles. All Rights Reserved. Copyright Policy

Electric vehicles are the next most promising vehicles globally as the electric technology contains a lot of potential. Although electric car manufacturers have done a wonderful job by coming up with new cars, the fact remains that they are not as widely accepted as petrol and diesel cars. Honda, at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, has unveiled an all new electric sports car concept called as Honda EV-STER. The fundamentals of design and concept are quite similar to that of Tesla Roadster(another leading electric car from Tesla) but the cars are a bit dissimilar. As per the claims made by Honda, EV-STER has a full charge range of 100 miles only but the 0-100 km/h acceleration is generous at 5 seconds. The body is made up of carbon fiber and the overall styling is very much influenced by Honda CR-Z but with a heavy dose of futuristic design. A very interesting feature on the inside is that instead of a steering wheel you get a yoke to steer the vehicle. This looks more of a gaming console and the dashboard and instrument cluster design complements it. Another interesting feature, also seen in some of the recent cars, is the driver [...]
Honda EV-STER Electric Sports Concept Car Unveiled At 2011 Tokyo Motor Show is a post from: CarBlogIndia - All About Automobiles. All Rights Reserved. Copyright Policy

For long, car companies are concentrating on electric vehicles and one of the most successful car of them all is the popular Chevrolet Volt. Ever since its launch the car proved to be one of the best looking and best performing vehicle but recently, one accident has forced the US govt. to raise its finger on the electrical technology it equips. The reason is that three weeks after a routine crash test, a Chevrolet Volt caught fire. This forced the Federal authorities to investigate from the safety to the handling of lithium-ion batteries being fitted in the same and other electric cars. The agency NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has asked General Motors, Nissan, Ford and others about the fire risk posed by li-ion batteries used in EVs and plug-in hybrids and it wants the same group of manufacturers to put their suggestions concerned with mitigating these fire risks, in front. According to the agency the risk is not greater in electric vehicles, but the same demand different safety standards and precautions owing to their powertrain design and configuration. The agency said, “NHTSA is focused on identifying the best ways to ensure that consumers and emergency responders are aware [...]
Chevrolet Volt Catches Fire After Crash Test- USA Govt.
Qualcomm announced the first Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) trial for London in what is a UK and industry-leading initiative. Qualcomm is collaborating with the UK Government, as well as the Mayor of London’s office and Transport for London (TfL) to deliver the trial. The pre-commercial trial is expected to start in early 2012 and will involve as many as 50 electric vehicles (EVs). The trial will use Qualcomm wireless inductive power transfer technology that enables high-efficiency power transfer across a large air gap. It is very easy to use: the driver simply parks the vehicle in the usual way and the system automatically aligns for power transfer, making parking easier and charging hassle free. image – Qualcomm Wireless Charging Trial At London Addison Lee, the UK’s largest minicab company, and Chargemaster plc, the leading European operator of advanced EV charging infrastructure, have also agreed to participate in the WEVC London trial. Prime Minister of England, David Cameron said, “This wireless charging technology is a giant leap forward for the electric car industry and I am delighted that London businesses will be among the first to benefit from the trial.
Mahindra and Mahindra has acquired Reva Electric car company and renamed it to Mahindra Reva about one year back and since then the efforts to launch a larger electric car have been greatly accelerated. NXR was first spotted testing in March 2010 testing on Indian roads. Since then the testing and improvements are going on for quite some time now. Recently it has been seen on Bangalore roads making rounds of road tests before the launch. The launch is expected soon, most likely by the end of 2011 or during Q4 of FY 2011-12. The Reva NXR is a 2 door 4 seater car with 160Km or range which will have high-tech features. The top speed of the NXR is 104 KMPL which is a pretty impressive speed for an electric car with low running cost.
Its been long since automobile manufacturers across the globe started considering other resources of energy, which pollute the environment less, for a better and cleaner future and the most common problem that these innovators always come across is of a good filling station network. Whether its an electric vehicle which needs charging station or a Hydrogen Fuel cell vehicle demanding hydrogen fuel filling stations, the “station” part is common and in order to see a technology being accepted globally, a vast infrastructure is needed. Talking only about electric vehicles powered by batteries, the range up to which a car can travel on one full charge defines the success of the same and we all know that a typical electric car battery lasts only for a few kilometers. Even if one crawls to a nearby charging station with a soon to be dead car, he or she would have to wait for a couple of hours for the battery to get fully charged. Importantly the charging isn’t as convenient as filling petrol, diesel or CNG to a car. The latest viable concept in the electric vehicle world is of swappable batteries. Renault in collaboration with Better Place (a firm dealing with [...]
Electric Cars With Swappable Batteries For Quick Replacement With Fully Charged Batteries Launched In Australia is a post from: CarBlogIndia - All About Automobiles. All Rights Reserved. Copyright Policy

BMW recently added a new sub-brand BMW I to its subsidiary list and the most unique thing about the new brand is that all its work, dedication, effort and research is aimed at manufacturing futuristic electric vehicles which will have least impact on the environment and still be effortless and comfortable. The initial line-up presented by the sub-brand includes two cars of which one is a small car while the other a sedan. Named as BMW i3 and BMW i8, the cars look very futuristic and full of innovations but what draws our interest is the BMW i3 small car which is being speculated to be launched in India in the coming years. With the recent announcement made by the government on tax rebate being offered on electric vehicles including cars and scooters, the possibility of BMW-I coming to India have been enhanced. Another reason is the recent success of BMW in India after selling appreciable number of units last year and even overtaking Mercedes-Benz. In fact according to sources, a senior official of BMW has been quoted saying that if the demand is adequate in our market, the German automaker might consider bringing the electric sub-brand to India. Moreover [...]
BMW i3 Electric Car Launch In India Possible is a post from: CarBlogIndia - All About Automobiles. All Rights Reserved. Copyright Policy

Ever since after buying Reva, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mahindra Reva has been working extremely hard on the next generation electric car, Reva NXR which proves to be an improvement over the previous one. All the problems like cramped interiors, lesser top speed and lower range which were existing have been successfully sorted out. As of now reports say that the Reva NXR is slated for launch in the year 2012 and soon after that Mahindra will also consider launching a more powerful Reva NXG in 2013.
