Official- Chevrolet Sail Launch In India By Mid 2012, Sedan By 2012 End– To Challenge Dzire And Etios

Chevrolet India (General Motors India) has finally come out and confirmed the launch timelines of is upcoming Chevrolet Sail hatchback which will launch around June 2012 and a sedan based on the Chevrolet Sail itself which will debut by December 2012 in India. Just like the Toyota Etios and Toyota Etios Liva, or Maruti Swift and Maruti Swift Dzire, the Chevrolet Sail combo will be a premium hatchback and an entry level sedan based on that hatchback. The Chevrolet Sail has been officially unveiled by Chevrolet India at the Auto Expo 2012 and has gathered a lot of positive response by the visitors at the exhibition. Here is a detailed report with exclusive pictures and video of Chevrolet Sail hatchback from Auto Expo 2012.

The Sail hatchback will be just under 4 meters and will be powered by a 1.2 Litre petrol engine and will be a direct competition to the premium hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift, Toyota Etios, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20 etc. which is an already competitive segment. Entry of a new player will make more choices available for car buyers. The Sail hatchback will gradually replace the Chevrolet Aveo UVA in India and will be priced somewhere between Rs. 4 Lakhs to Rs. 6 Lakhs bracket. There is not enough information about the diesel engine variants for India, but there maybe some.

The Chevrolet Sail sedan will compete directly with the established leaders in this segment like the Maruti Swift Dzire, Toyota Etios Sedan etc. Nissan Sunny also falls somewhere in this competition towards the higher end. The Sail Sedan is a 4.2 meters long car which may not fall in the small car category unless GM is planning to bring a compact sedan or CS version of the same which seems highly unlikely as of now. The pricing of the Sail sedan can be expected to start somewhere close to Rs. 5.25 Lakhs and may go up to Rs. 7 lakhs depending on equipment and feature set. It will be a bold placement in a segment which has almost no competition and is dominated by a few players. This may turn out to be a high volume product in the long run for General Motors India.

GM India is quite optimistic about these two cars for India as they are doing well in Chinese markets where GM sells these cars in collaboration with SIAC. The customer needs and expectations form cars in India are quite similar to the Chinese counterparts so the optimism seems justified.
