In terms of design, the new Toyota Fortuner is a huge step forward over its predecessor with a much more radical exterior design elements. Although the SUV retains the butch stance, it now gets sleek new headlamps with projector units and LED daytime running lamps and oodles of chrome added to the front end. The bonnet appears to be longer and flatter than before.

Moving over to the side, the most striking feature is the unusual window line which gets a prominent kink around the C-pillar region. The side of the new Fortuner is pretty plain otherwise. The wheel arches are less flared than before, but they get some black plastic cladding this time around.
At the back, the next gen Fortuner’s tail lamps get a similar treatment to the headlamps-sleek and narrow. The SUV retains the wraparound look for the rear windshield. The tail lamps are expected to get LED detailing. Other notable features include a rear spoiler, less prominent roof rails, chrome garnish for the window area, new alloy wheel design. Overall, the new Fortuner looks very modern but seems have lost some of the butch appeal of the vehicle it will replace. One of the major reasons for the Fortuner’s popularity was its design. It may come under fire from certain prospective buyers, this time around, for being too soft.
The interiors of the outgoing Fortuner, which are basically a rehashed version of the Innova‘s, have always been a letdown. The next generation model addresses this issue. It gets a much more modern design which is in line with Toyota’s outgoing design language. Hints of the Corolla Altis can be seen in the AC vents design. The interiors feel much more premium than before and worthy of a vehicle that costs upwards of 30 lakhs. It is finished in varying shades of dark materials. Bits like the centre console, steering wheel, auto aircon are all new. There could also be an increase in space in the second and third row of seats.

Over the years, the Fortuner has turned out to be a very successful model for Toyota. Even after the arrival of newer competition like the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Ford Endeavour, the Fortuner continued to sell strongly thanks to the solid following it has developed since its launch in India. The new Fortuner, which is better than the current model in every single aspect, should help Toyota continue its domination of the SUV segment for next 5-6 years at least.
