Yamaha MT series is the naked streetfighter series and the latest addition to it is the new MT-125. The company has unveiled the smallest MT for the global markets and the global launch is expected to happen by December 2019.
FYI, in some markets, where the earlier Yamaha MT-125 was sold, it was a lot different looking than the one that we have right now. One glance and we can say that the new MT is heavily based on the bigger MT-15.
MT-125 gets a 124.7cc liquid-cooled fuel-injected engine, that produces 14.5 BHP at 9000 RPM and 12.4 Nm at 8000 RPM of peak torque, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. In comparison to the 150cc model, it produces 4.5 BHP and nearly 2 Nm lesser. It also comes with Yamaha’s VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) Technology, that helps in delivering liner acceleration and better mileage as well.
The new MT-125 uses the fresh Deltabox frame, single-piece low-height handlebar, the Samurai-shaped front portion and a single-channel ABS. The ground clearance stands at 140mm and the bike just weighs around 140 kgs. The regular MT-125 gets telescopic forks and a box-type swingarm with single-channel ABS. The UK version comes with USD forks, aluminium swingarm and dual-channel ABS.
Talking about our Indian market, should Yamaha bring this one as well? If the MT-15 goes for Rs 1.36 Lakhs, then the MT-125 will, of course, demand prices lower by around Rs 20,000. So, if launched in India, it should go for anything around Rs 1.15 Lakhs or so.
While seeing the popularity of the KTM Duke 125, there are possibilities of the MT-125 seeing something in the Indian market. Of course, it will be priced a lot cheaper than the Duke 125, which goes for Rs 1.30 Lakhs now. Continuing on Yamaha’s statement of just focusing on premium motorcycles, this one could turn out to be a good addition.
However, there is a huge difference in power between the Duke 125 and Duke 200. The same is not between the MT-15 and MT-125, which could end up either one seating the other’s sales. So, do you think will it work out in our market?
