3 Dead as Google Maps Direct Them Broken Bridge

Technology is an integral part of modern living but sometimes, things could go terribly wrong because of it

In a rather tragic turn of events, 3 people lost their lives after falling from a broken bridge which Google Maps directed them to. We use Google Maps for navigating all the time. In fact, it is one of the most used applications in the world. You don’t need to know anything about a place and still the application will guide you to your exact location. In this manner, you can go to any city in the world and still know your way around. Apart from that, people use it to see which routes to take on the roads. Let us take a look at the details of this recent case.

3 Dead After Google Maps Allegedly Misdirected Them

This occurrence stems from akanksha_rjt on Instagram. The reporter mentions that 3 people were coming back from a wedding in Badaun district in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. During the stretch between Dataganj and Bareilly, tragedy hit as the car they were travelling in fell from the bridge into the Ramganga River. As per various reports, they were travelling at high speeds and following Google Maps. For some reason, the navigation application didn’t show them that the bridge was broken. Unable to control the car in time, they ended up falling off it. All 3 occupants lost their lives on the spot.

A PTI report mentioned that the Circle Officer of the area Ashutosh Shivam said, “Earlier this year, floods had caused the front portion of the bridge to collapse into the river, but this change had not been updated in the GPS. As a result, the driver was misled and did not realize the bridge was unsafe.” To make matters worse, there were no safety barriers or warning signs about the condition of the bridge. That resulted in this horrific accident which killed Kaushal, Vivek and Amit. This is incredibly sad and shocking.

My View

I am saddened to see the road situation in our country. The authorities should’ve have put a warning sign for the drivers to make them aware of the fact that the bridge ahead is broken. This can easily lead to more such cases, especially during the nighttime. On the flip side, it is necessary to follow traffic protocols to ensure our safety. Had the driver been driving within the speed limit, perhaps he could’ve reacted quickly enough to halt the car and avoid this accident. But since he was overspeeding, he didn’t get a chance to slow down. Let us pledge to be responsible road users and adhere to the rules and regulations.
