With modern consumers, technology is often at the centre of making a decision to buy a particular car
In an interesting announcement from Hyundai, 33% of its customers enrolled for a digital key over the traditional key. That represents just how tech-savvy new-age car buyers have become. Just until a few years ago, these convenience amenities were strictly restricted to high-end luxury cars. However, with the advancement of technology, cars at a much lower price point have started getting equipped with premium functionalities. In essence, the technology has, sort of, levelled the playing field. Let us take a look at the details of this latest report.
33% Hyundai Customers Choose Digital Key Over Regular Key
Hyundai Motor India has reported a 33% enrolment rate for its Digital Key feature. This points to changing customer habits and a rising interest in technology-based convenience in vehicles. The Digital Key was first introduced in September 2024 with the Hyundai Alcazar. It later became available in the Hyundai Creta Electric in January 2025. In less than a year, the feature has seen strong acceptance among buyers.
For the uninitiated, Digital Key replaces the traditional car key. Using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, owners can create a virtual key on their smartphones, smartwatches, or a dedicated NFC card. The Hyundai Bluelink app manages this setup. Users can unlock the car by tapping their device on the door handle. To start the vehicle, the device must be placed on the wireless charging pad. The feature also allows secure sharing. Up to three people or seven devices can be given access at a time.
Access can be revoked anytime through the app, giving users full control. Hyundai notes that 35% of Digital Key users are already sharing access with family or friends. This highlights the practicality of the system in real-world use. By reducing dependence on a physical key, the Digital Key also prevents common problems like misplacement. Its adoption shows how Indian car buyers are welcoming advanced tech features that simplify daily driving. With both the Alcazar and Creta Electric offering it, Hyundai has opened the door to a new style of vehicle access. I am sure, more Hyundai models with get this feature going forward.
Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director – HMIL, said: “At Hyundai Motor India, innovation is driven by purpose, offering meaningful solutions that elevate customer experience. As the first OEM to launch connected car technology in India back in 2019, we remain committed to democratizing premium features for Indian customers. The enthusiastic response to Digital Key reaffirms our belief in creating technology that adds real value to everyday life.”
