Snow chains are commonly used in the Himalayan towns during peak winters when the roads are inundated in thick snow.
This latest vlog shows the importance of snow chains and a Mahindra Thar owner takes a group for a winter expedition in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. Spiti is a hidden gem in the state of HP that has become an attractive tourist destination in the last few years. However, adventure seekers have commenced winter excursions in this region where temperatures can drop to -30 degrees Celsius during the winter. In such scenarios, professional experience, guidance and hardware are needed to survive.

Mahindra Thar with Snow Chains
The video has been uploaded by DCV Expeditions on YouTube. He is a popular YouTuber who often goes on solo adventure trips in his SUV to the Himalayas. However, this time around, he has brought a convoy of people with him. There are all sorts of popular off-roading machines on this trip including the likes of Mahindra Thar, Mahindra XUV700, Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu V-Cross pickup trucks. They are travelling in thick snow and even the traces of the road are not visible due to high snow.

The YouTuber has been in such situations countless times in his career. He has brought multiple snow chains with him for different tyre sizes. He teaches the members of the group how to tie them around the tyres. In fact, at one place during their journey, his Thar (which is leading the way) gets totally stuck in the snow. That is when they decided to wrap the chain around the rear tyre and the SUV moves quite comfortably after that.

Importance of Snow Chains
What ends up happening when you drive on the snow is that the snow gets filled in between the treads of the tyres. This causes the entire tyre surface to become flat causing it to skid. This makes the driver lose control of the SUV. Also, it leads to wheel spin when accelerated hard essentially burying the SUV in the snow further. Snow chains ensure that the tyres have enough traction by providing a large surface area that can’t be covered with snow. Hence, the vehicles are able to keep moving. But one must know how to use snow chains and obviously, it can’t be used for high-speed driving scenarios.
