Maruti Ertiga Carries Honda Activa on Roof

We keep coming across unbelievable occurrences on Indian roads

In a rather bizarre turn of events, a Maruti Ertiga taxi was seen carrying a Honda Activa and some other luggage on the roof while on the move. This is quite hilarious and perilous. Unfortunately, this is not something too rare. I have reported tons of instances of people performing all sorts of weird activities on Indian roads. It is well-known that a vast majority of drivers, especially in semi-urban and rural parts of the country, flout traffic regulations. In fact, some of them are not even aware of the laws. Hence, we end up getting visuals of such cases.

This video surfaced from autoday.in on Instagram. The visuals capture something truly unique and immensely dangerous. We see the rear of a Maruti Ertiga taxi riding on a highway. Someone driving behind it made the entire video. The first thing that strikes the viewers is the Honda Activa scooter tied to the roof of the MPV. Not only that, there are a few bags securely tied to the scooter as well. We know that MPVs often have rugged roof carriers to accommodate large amounts of baggage for the passengers. However, to take a scooter on an MPV is not something we see every day.

Now, this can be dangerous on multiple counts. Firstly, this is no way of transporting a vehicle on the highway. There are dedicated flatbed cars, pickup trucks or large commercial trucks to carry out this activity. Hence, one must always opt for them to ensure road safety. In instances like these, it is also possible that the rope breaks during the journey and ends up creating a fatal situation for other road users. Also, the body roll of the car is increased excessively because of the weight on the roof. This can be challenging while travelling on mountain roads.

My View

Indian roads can encounter all kinds of strange car owners, who just don’t think before committing to a process. Just to save some money by not hiring a commercial vehicle to transport the scooter, this person ends up risking the lives of so many people. This is something we need to take seriously. If you find anyone doing such idiotic activities and jeopardizing the safety of others, you must report them to the authorities so that appropriate action can be taken against them. Let us pledge to be responsible road users.

Yatharth Chauhan, Managing Editor

Having observed Indian vehicular behaviour for over a decade and a half, I can tell you that such incidents perfectly highlight the gap between our booming car market and the maturity of our road culture. The Ertiga is engineered as a family MPV, not a makeshift logistics carrier, and misuse like this not only endangers others but also undermines the intent behind modern safety norms. As our vehicle parc expands rapidly, India urgently needs stronger enforcement and far greater public awareness to keep pace. Until then, episodes like these will continue to remind us why our roads remain among the most unpredictable in the world.
