The premium mid-size electric SUV space is heating up with tons of new models, giving potential buyers a wide range of options
In this post, I am comparing the newly launched Mahindra XEV 9S and the Tata Harrier EV on the basis of specs and price. In the last couple of years, the EV market in India has evolved tremendously. As a consequence, carmakers have started launching new models to cater to the growing demand. Mahindra and Tata have been at the forefront of that revolution. Mahindra has introduced two new sub-brands – XEV and BE, while Tata Motors has been enjoying the lion’s share in this space for a long time. For now, let us compare these two thoroughly.
Mahindra XEV 9S vs Tata Harrier EV – Specs
The Mahindra XEV 9S is available in three battery sizes – 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh. These offer a claimed MIDC range of 521 km, 600 km, and 679 km on a single charge, respectively. The electric motor powers the rear wheels to produce 170 kW (231 PS), 180 kW (245 PS) and 210 kW (285 PS) of peak power, respectively, while the torque remains the same, 380 Nm, in all these variants. It takes 20 minutes to go from 20% to 80% with a 180 kW DC fast charger for the 79 kWh and 70 kWh batteries. With a 140 kW DC fast charger, the 59 kWh battery takes 20 minutes to charge from 20% to 80%. In the most powerful settings, the electric SUV propels from 0 to 100 km/h in a matter of 7 seconds with a top speed of 202 km/h.
On the other hand, the Tata Harrier EV comes with two battery pack options – 65 kWh and 75 kWh. These boast an MIDC-claimed range of 538 km and 622 km (622 km w/ AWD), respectively. Note that buyers even get the option of a dual-motor all-wheel-drive with the Harrier EV. In the RWD versions, the power and torque outputs are 238 PS and 315 Nm, respectively. However, with the dual-motor setup, the power and torque increase to an impressive 238 PS (rear motor) + 158 PS (front motor) and 504 Nm, respectively. In this configuration, the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h comes up in just 6.3 seconds. Using a 120 kW DC fast charger, the battery gets juiced up from 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes.

My View
These two electric SUVs offer distinct personalities originating from their brand images. While the Mahindra XEV 9S is, in essence, the electric avatar of the XUV700, the Tata Harrier EV is the electric version of the Harrier. Hence, they have their roots emanating from ICE models. In any case, the Harrier EV has the advantage of the all-wheel-drive configuration but only offers 5 seats. On the other hand, the XEV 9S is a practical 7-seater product with tons of new-age tech and amenities. I would advise our readers to experience the two cars in the flesh to make up their minds.
