The mid-size sedan from Maruti Suzuki has not been having a great time on the sales charts due to stiff competition
In this post, we take a look at the details of the Global NCAP safety rating of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The sedan was launched in India back in 2014. It did great sales during the initial years. However, after the rivals in this segment received significant updates and new models were introduced, Maruti just gave up on the Ciaz and didn’t update it for a long time. Today, we have products like the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia in this space. Hence, the sales of the Ciaz have taken a major hit.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz GNCAP Safety Rating
The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz bagged an abysmal 1-star safety rating at the Global NCAP in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and a 3-star rating in Child Occupant Protection (COP) categories. These ratings are based on the impressive 20.86 points out of 32 in AOP and 28.57 points out of 49 in COP. The standard equipment list includes 2 airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts at the rear, seatbelt pretensioner, seatbelt load-limiter, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and seatbelt reminder (AIS-145). All these factors contributed to the overall scores.
Digging deeper, the Ciaz obtained 7.362 points out of 16 in the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test and 12.494 points out of 16 in the Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test in the AOP section. However, the Side Pole Impact Pole Test was not conducted. This was enough for just a 1-star rating. On the other hand, the COP section encapsulates a Dynamic Score of 24 out of 24, a CRS Installation Score of 4.57 out of 12 and a Vehicle Assessment Score of 0 out of 13. This resulted in a decent 3-star safety rating. Note that both child seat mounts are rearward facing.
My View
In the last few years, the safety standards and equipment list on modern cars have gone up tremendously. Since Maruti has not updated the Ciaz for a long time, it has resulted in the car lagging behind in terms of safety amenities. That has caused this poor display at the Global NCAP crash test. I don’t believe this will affect the sales of the car too much since the demand is already quite low.
