The mid-size SUV segment is among the most crowded spaces in the Indian automobile market
The sales figures for January 2026 reveal that the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Victoris and Toyota Hyryder have dominated the new Tata Sierra. The mid-size SUV space is brutally competitive. Also, as the discretionary income among Indians increases, people love to splurge on such family SUVs. That has led to a massive surge in the sales of these SUVs in the last few years. For now, let us take a look at the details of the recent sales figures.
Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara Dominate Tata Sierra on Sales Charts
As per the latest news reports, for the month of January 2026, the Hyundai Creta took the top spot on the sales charts, as expected, with 17,921 units sold. Interestingly, the Maruti Victoris was not too far behind with 15,240 units sold. Taking the third spot was the Kia Seltos with a decent 10,639 units and the Toyota Hyryder booked the fourth position with 9,156 sales. Finally, the Maruti Grand Vitara completed the top 5 list with 7,030 units sold. The new Tata Sierra was in sixth spot with 7,003 sales. I must mention here that the Sierra went on sale in the middle of January. Hence, it would be intriguing to see how these numbers change next month.
The Tata Sierra comes with multiple engine and transmission choices, including a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel unit, generating 106 PS / 145 Nm, 160 PS / 255 Nm and 118 PS / 280 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. These mills can be paired with a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic and a 7-speed DCA gearbox. The prices range from Rs 11.49 lakh to Rs 21.29 lakh, ex-showroom.

Having tracked the mid-size SUV space for over a decade, I can confidently say that brand trust and proven track record still outweigh nostalgia in the Indian market. The Hyundai Creta and its key rivals continue to dominate because buyers prioritise reliability, resale value and established service networks over novelty. The Tata Sierra’s numbers are respectable given its mid-month launch, but sustaining momentum in this segment requires consistent execution, not just a strong nameplate. The coming months will reveal whether Tata can truly disrupt this fiercely competitive category.
