KTM India Readying 350 Duke to Counter High Tax

The move is aimed at ensuring that the enthusiastic riders get to experience the performance of a KTM without having to shell out a fortune

KTM India is planning to launch the 350 Duke to give some tax relief to potential buyers. KTM is among the most prominent two-wheeler manufacturers in the country, which offers performance-focused products at competitive prices. That has been its major attraction since the beginning. That is why the KTM buyers are a distinct bunch of consumers who want strong performance and a strikingly unique appearance. For now, let us take a look at the details of this case.

KTM India Readying 350 Duke to Counter High Tax

Manik Nangia, President, Probiking at Bajaj Auto, recently confirmed the arrival of the KTM 350 Duke for our market to navigate effectively around the high taxes. For the uninitiated, the tax on bikes with engine capacity over 350cc is 40%, while on those smaller than 350cc, it is 18%. Hence, a huge difference in the final price exists. To tackle this, KTM India has decided to introduce a 350 Duke. It will embody the core performance DNA associated with larger KTM bikes. At the same time, the smaller engine will ensure aggressive pricing.

Despite carrying a smaller engine, the KTM 350 Duke will share the chassis, design and performance traits with the 390 Duke. In essence, the users will appreciate and experience the DNA of KTM without getting beaten down by exorbitant taxes. The appeal of this new motorcycle is evident. It remains to be seen how well KTM equips it in terms of amenities and how the engine behaves. If all goes well, the new KTM 350 Duke might just be among the most impressive products in its class.

This is a classic case of OEMs engineering products around Indiaโ€™s tax structure rather than pure market demand. In my view, KTMโ€™s decision to slot the Duke just under the 350cc threshold is a smart, almost inevitable move to retain its value-for-performance proposition. I believe this could significantly widen KTMโ€™s appeal, especially among enthusiasts who were priced out of the 390. However, the real success will hinge on how well KTM manages to preserve its signature performance despite the downsized engine.
