Bajaj Chetak electric scooter is among the most popular in the segment and we might soon see an even more affordable trim.

A more affordable version of the Bajaj Chetak EV has been spotted testing on the roads recently. It would be a direct competitor to the Ola S1. Note that Ola offers S1 for customers looking for practicality and affordability and the S1 Pro for those looking for exquisite performance and long range. Similarly, the regular Chetak electric scooter is the one for performance and long range while this new model could cater to that segment of customers who will want a cheaper version. Let us dive into the details of this electric scooter.

This video comes from Auto Helper Marathi on YouTube. It captures a man riding this new Bajaj Chetak on the highway. The condition is rainy. But the visuals are quite vivid. They give away some details of the electric scooter. To begin with, the rear wheel is covered which means that the electric motor will be placed inside it. It is called the in-wheel motor which is fairly common in many electric two-wheelers. In addition to that, there are some minor changes to the existing Chetak electric scooter on the exterior.

The current model is priced from Rs 1.29 lakh to Rs 1.46 lakh, ex-showroom. It is available in 2 variants and 7 colour options. It gets the multi-spoke alloy wheels. However, the new model could be priced under Rs 1 lakh, ex-showroom. There has been a decline in the FAME subsidies recently. That could have been what prompted the Pune-based two-wheeler giant to come up with this new model. It is a common practice a lot of automobile players follow. In order to ensure high volumes, low-spec models are often introduced. As a result, this new Bajaj Chetak EV will go up against the Ola S1.

What We Think

There is no doubt that the future of mobility will be electric. All major automobile players across the globe have announced ambitious plans to go carbon-neutral in the coming decade. EVs are being launched left and right. In India, the electric two-wheeler space is experiencing exponential growth, particularly in the last few years. Going forward, more legacy and new players will compete to grab the attention of new customers. Hence, the initial prices of the EVs will go down as the batteries start becoming more inexpensive.
