EV fires are extremely difficult to douse because of the chemicals released from the batteries
In a rather tragic incident, an electric car caught fire while being driven on the road. In recent times, there have been quite a few cases of fires in EVs. These were generally linked to electric scooters. Still, we have come across a few instances with four-wheeler electric cars as well. As EVs gain popularity on the sales charts, certain EV-specific issues have also come to the surface. For now, let us take a look at the details of this latest case.
Electric Car Catches Fire While in Use
We are able to come across the details of this case courtesy of ajmer_smartcity on Instagram. The visuals capture the aftermath of the entire saga. In fact, some online news reports have already surfaced. These state that the EV was being driven on a flyover in Ajmer, Rajasthan, when it suddenly caught fire. The exact reason for the flames was not known at the time of writing this article. In any case, the Police and Fire Brigade officials are seen on the spot.
The reports even mention that the people inside the car had to jump out to save themselves. As the flames engulfed the vehicle, it came to a standstill after coming down from the flyover in the middle of the road. It is clear from the visuals that the authorities were able to arrive on the spot in time, which is why the car was not completely destroyed by the fire. So far, no injuries have been reported to the occupants. After some time, the car was parked on the side of the road as the traffic movement was resumed.
My View
I have written about EV fires quite a lot in recent times. The chemical composition of the EV batteries leads to a chain reaction, which makes putting out the fire challenging. In fact, in some cases, the fire has gone on for hours and even a couple of days. That is why it is important to save your life and not try to control the fire. We hope that carmakers come up with more ways to make the EVs even safer going forward. I shall keep an eye out for more details in this case.
