Electric Rickshaw Driver Sets EV on Fire Over Range Issues

Indian roads often capture unbelievable instances and this is the latest case in point

A rather bizarre and shocking case has emerged from Rajasthan, where a frustrated electric rickshaw driver ended up setting his EV on fire outside the dealership. We know that the demand and sales of electric three-wheelers have been rising rapidly in India for a few years now. The low running costs attract many buyers who wish to earn a decent living. However, there is always a difference between the claimed range and the real-world range with EVs. For now, let us take a look at the details of this latest case.

Electric Rickshaw Driver Sets EV on Fire Over Range Issues

The specifics of this occurrence stem from tv1indialive on Instagram. As per the information online, this event took place on Fifth Road in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The driver, Mohan Solanki, of this electric scooter was allegedly disgruntled with the sudden sharp decline in the range of the e-rickshaw from around 170 km to just 70 km on a single charge. Reports mention that he complained to the dealership multiple times and even demanded a replacement. The dealership staff reportedly denied his claims and argued that the performance of the EV is within the standard limits. Previously, the EV owner had tied the EV to his donkey a few months ago to mark his protest because of similar issues.

He has evidently been frustrated with his vehicle for a long time. In the video, we see him spraying some sort of inflammable liquid onto his rickshaw in front of the showroom. After a few seconds, he set it ablaze. In fact, we also see his wife crying as soon as the flames emerged and engulfed the EV. Local sources confirmed that Solanki purchased the EV 17 months ago for Rs 5 lakh. However, in the last few weeks, he observed a sudden fall in the range, which makes things challenging to run the daily operations. That is what compelled him to take this extreme step.

My View

Now, I would like to advise our readers to not take anything at face value online. We are not aware of all the details of this absurd case. Hence, we must not jump to any conclusions. Apart from that, we must understand that the companies give out a claimed range figure based on standard tests. However, these numbers often vary quite a bit, based on multiple external factors like temperature, driving mannerisms, etc. Therefore, one must be prepared to see some deviation. I shall keep an eye out for any further developments in this case in the coming days.
