Bharat Taxi Launched

Bharat Taxi is slated to rival the Ola, Uber and Rapido, while being a government-backed entity

Bharat Taxi app was launched on a pilot basis in Delhi on December 2, 2025, and it is currently averaging 5,500 rides daily. These include 4,000 from the airport and around 1,500 from all the other locations. What is even more interesting to note is that it offers rides across a diverse range of categories, including cab, auto and bike. Until now, over 1.4 lakh drivers have already registered on the platform. Clearly, the app is growing rapidly. For now, let us take a look at the details of this new app here.

The Bharat Taxi is run by Sahakar Taxi Corporation Limited, which is a driver-owned cooperative backed by government entities and financial institutions like NCDC, IFFCO, AMUL, KRIBHCO, NAFED, NABARD, NDDB and NCEL. The Government of India is the chief promoter via the Ministry of Cooperation. Furthermore, there are two elected driver representatives on the board. Note that the app was first introduced by Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in March 2024. The aim was to reduce dependence on private companies like Ola and Uber.

A salient feature of this initiative is that this platform doesn’t charge commissions from drivers. Apps like Ola and Uber take around 20-30% commissions from their drivers. Moreover, there will be additional benefits for the drivers, including annual dividends, a share in the cooperative’s profits and insurance cover. For the passengers, one advantage is that there won’t be any surge charges based on the time of day. Also, a thorough identification of the drivers will be done before hiring. Other security features are live location tracking, driver verification and the ability to share ride details with friends or family. The aim is to offer a fair, transparent and safe medium of transportation. Finally, the app will even be connected to services like the Metro for wide connectivity.

My View

Bharat Taxi could be a great initiative from the Government of India. It embodies the digital technology to ensure that new-age users are able to operate. Also, its benefits over the private enterprises would attract more customers, which would mean a fair price in the market overall. Even the registered drivers will benefit immensely since they won’t have to pay significant commissions. The only challenge with such apps is the quality and user interface. If the app is developed professionally, it could disrupt the market.

Editor’s Note

Yatharth Chauhan, Managing Editor

From what I’ve seen over the years, Bharat Taxi is less about disrupting Ola and Uber overnight and more about correcting the structural imbalance in India’s app-based mobility space. A zero-commission, cooperative-led model directly addresses driver dissatisfaction while keeping fares predictable for users. However, scale, service consistency and app reliability will ultimately decide whether this becomes a credible alternative or just a policy-backed experiment. If executed well, this could quietly reshape how shared mobility works in India’s value-sensitive market.
