Hyundai Exter CNG Launched

Like the Tata Punch iCNG, the Hyundai Exter Hy-CNG Duo offers a twin-cylinder setup to optimize boot space

A twin-cylinder CNG variant of the Hyundai Exter has just been launched in India. Dubbed Exter Hy- CNG Duo, the new variant offers dual-cylinder technology similar to what’s available on the Tata Punch iCNG. The new setup optimizes the boot space without affecting the overall CNG storage capacity. Note that there is also a single-cylinder option available. CNG has emerged as a great option for a whole bunch of car buyers in recent years. This is particularly true for city dwellers since the infrastructure around CNG is adequate. The biggest advantage of CNG powertrain is its extremely high mileage without a substantial premium on the initial price. Let us take a look at the details of the Hyundai Exter Hy- CNG Duo.

Hyundai Exter Hy-CNG Duo Specs and Price

Like before, the micro SUV comes with a 1.2-litre Bi-Fuel (Petrol + CNG) engine which churns out a decent 50.5 kW (69 PS) and 95.2 Nm of peak power and torque. It is available with a sole 5-speed manual transmission. This avatar of the Exter comes with an Integrated Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to ensure maximum safety and seamless switching between petrol and CNG. The ARAI-rated fuel efficiency is 27.1 km/kg with the 60-litre (water equivalent) fuel tank. Buyers can purchase the Hyundai Exter CNG in three trims – S, SX and Exter Knight SX. The prices range from Rs 8.50 lakh to Rs 9.38 lakh, ex-showroom.

Interior and Features

The interior of the Hyundai Exter Hy-CNG Duo remains identical to the regular version. But that is not a bad thing since the cabin of the Exter is one of the most feature-rich in this segment. It gets the latest tech, convenience, connectivity, and safety amenities to pamper the occupants. Some of the top highlights of the micro SUV include:

  • Smart Electric Sunroof
  • Fully Automatic Temperature Control
  • 8-inch Touchscreen Infotainment Display
  • 6 Airbags
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC)

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Tarun Garg, Hyundai Motor India Limited, said, “Hyundai Motor India Limited is committed to providing sustainable and innovative mobility solutions. We are excited to launch our entry SUV- EXTER with Dual cylinder CNG technology. With high fuel efficiency, ample boot space, and versatile offerings of the SUV, we are confident that the EXTER Hy-CNG Duo will appeal to customers looking for a reliable and efficient vehicle that helps reduce their carbon footprint and also fulfils their desire for exploration.”

Our View

The Hyundai Exter is already a popular product in this category due to its attractive pricing and availability of tons of modern features. While its CNG trim already attracted those looking for low running costs, the Hy-CNG Duo variant should enhance the ownership experience of such buyers. Furthermore, with the addition of the new variant, the Exter nullifies a major advantage the twin-cylinder-equipped Punch had. I’m sure that the new variant should help this Grand i10 Nios-based crossover cater to an even wider customer base by offering low running without compromising the boot space in a big way. Also, with these twin-cylinder setups gaining popularity, it’s now only a matter of time before other carmakers follow suit. In fact, a similar variant of the Maruti Fronx is likely to be around the corner. Stay tuned!
