The Indian roads and highways are incorporating innovative techniques as part of the modernization
India finally inaugurates its first musical road on the northbound lane of Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Coastal Road in Mumbai. There are quite a few such creative road techniques used in many parts of the world. Now, even India joins this elite list of nations. This also highlights just how cutting-edge technology is being incorporated in the Indian roads infrastructure. We already have some of the most mind-blowing tunnels and bridges built in the Himalayan regions, which are considered modern-day engineering marvels. Hence, the country is on the right track in this regard.
India Gets Its First Musical Road in Mumbai
As per the details about this unique endeavour, BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has used Hungarian technology to carve out precise grooves on the asphalt to create a rhythm. This is a 500-metre stretch, where a distinct sound is produced when the car is driven at around 70-80 km/h. As the cars’ tyres pass over these strips, the friction creates specific vibrations that resonate as musical notes inside the cabin. For this road in Mumbai, the song chosen to be played is the Oscar-winning “Jai Ho” from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.
Note that one needs to be precise with the speed. If you go too fast or too slow, the frequency shifts, and the tune becomes distorted. This also ensures that motorists adhere to the speed limits. To be exact, this stretch of road appears 500 metres after you exit the Worli-bound underground tunnel. Furthermore, the BMC has placed signboards at 500 m, 100 m, and 60 m marks to ensure you have enough time to steady your pace before the “concert” begins. This is bound to bring cheer to the drivers and onlookers alike.

As someone who has tracked the evolution of India’s road infrastructure for over a decade and a half, I see this musical road as more than just a novelty. It reflects a subtle but important shift, from building basic connectivity to enhancing the driving experience itself. In a market where we are discussing ADAS, connected tech and premium mobility, such initiatives show that our infrastructure is beginning to match the aspirations of modern Indian motorists. If executed well and maintained properly, this could be the start of many such experiential upgrades on our highways.
