Indian OEMs like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Mahindra are redefining global perception through strong car exports. Hereโs how India is turning into a true automotive export powerhouse
The Indian car industry is in a new phase. Weโre not just making cars for our own roads anymore. Instead, weโre buildingย global brands through exports. This is the next big chapter for โBrand India.โ As someone whoโs seen the industry up close, I can say this with confidence: our automakers are no longer content playing within borders. They want global recognition and theyโre earning it. Three carmakers, in particular, are driving this shift-ย Maruti Suzuki,ย Hyundai Motor India, andย Mahindra & Mahindra. Together, they form the backbone of Indiaโs growing export power.
Why Exports Matter More Than Ever
Exports are not just about shipping cars abroad. Theyโre aboutย building credibility. They prove that Indian manufacturing can meet international standards in quality, design, safety, and reliability. Indiaโs car exports have surged over the past year, touching record highs. Passenger vehicle exports alone have crossed the 7 lakh mark, showing how strong the global demand is for India-made cars. When Indian cars sell overseas and perform well, they take our reputation along for the ride. Each shipment strengthens the โMade in Indiaโ tag, not as a low-cost option, but as aย smart, capable and trusted choice.
Maruti Suzuki: The Volume & Reach Leader
Maruti Suzuki sits right at the top of the export pyramid. With overย 3.3 lakh units exported in FY25, itโs Indiaโs number one car exporter by a wide margin. The strategy is simple but effective: wide model range, broad market spread, and proven reliability. From the Baleno to the Fronx and Swift, Maruti ships cars to more than 100 countries. Meanwhile, the eVitara not only highlights how a global brand places its trust in its Indian operations for producing its first-ever all-electric model, but Indiaโs export of the eVitara also marks a significant milestone for the countryโs automotive industry.

When I look at Marutiโs export journey, I see a company that has quietly turned its cost and reliability strengths into global appeal. Abroad, Maruti-made Suzuki models stand forย practicality, efficiency, and affordability. These are qualities appreciated by every developing market. So, we can say that Maruti represents theย scale pillarย of Indiaโs export success story.

Hyundai India: The Quality & Integration Champion
Hyundai Motor India is the next big export pillar. Its plant near Chennai is not just one of the largest in India but also one of Hyundaiโs most important global manufacturing hubs. Hyundai has been exporting Made-in-India cars to over 85 countries for years. Whatโs impressive is that these arenโt just entry-level models. Theyโre globally competitive vehicles that meet high-quality standards. When I drive a modern Hyundai abroad, the fit and finish feel consistent across markets. Thatโs no coincidence. Itโs the result of deep integration between Hyundaiโs Indian R&D and its global design and quality systems. In essence, Hyundai represents theย quality pillarย in this export-driven transformation. It shows the world that Indian plants can produce world-class cars.

Mahindra & Mahindra: The Character & Ambition Builder
Then thereโs Mahindra, the homegrown champion that’s fast gaining respect in many global markets. Quite understandably, Mahindraโs exports are driven by its strong SUV DNA. The Thar, Scorpio, and XUV700 have started building solid traction in markets like South Africa, Australia, and parts of Latin America. What I like about Mahindraโs story is that itโs not chasing sheer volume. Itโs chasingย identity. The brand speaks of adventure, capability, and Indian engineering confidence. And with the Born Electric platform and futuristic designs, Mahindra is clearly gearing up for the next chapter in exports. In my books, Mahindra is theย character pillarย of Indiaโs automotive brand evolution.

Building โBrand Indiaโ
All in all, Maruti bringsย scale, Hyundai bringsย quality, and Mahindra bringsย identity. Together, they are reshaping how the world sees Indian automobiles. For decades, Indian cars were seen as affordable but not aspirational. Thatโs changing fast. Today, our cars are getting global safety ratings, international design awards, and strong customer trust overseas. In a way, every exported car is a brand ambassador for Indian skill, technology, and resilience.
The Road Ahead
The next leap will come fromย EV exports. As the world shifts to electric mobility, Indian OEMs will need to build EVs that meet international expectations for performance and sustainability. Also, emerging markets in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia will keep driving export demand. Whoever builds the strongest product-market fit there will lead the race. For long-term success, OEMs must focus on three things:
- Localising components for cost efficiency,
- Expanding service networks abroad, and
- Creating brand stories that connect emotionally with global consumers.

As someone whoโs tracked the Indian auto scene for years, I can say this confidently-ย the export story is no longer a side note. Itโs the headline.
Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Mahindra are proving that Indian automakers can be globally relevant. Every car that leaves our ports carriesย our ambition, our pride, and our growing reputationย as a serious player in global market.
