Maruti Fronx ANCAP Crash Test Safety Rating

The Baleno-based crossover has displayed a rather disappointing performance in the Australian crash test

The made-in-India Maruti Fronx has performed poorly at the ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program), scoring an abysmal 1-star safety rating. Note that the Fronx was introduced in New Zealand in June 2025 and in Australia in August 2025. Fronx is a popular product in India, particularly for those who want a compact crossover with a peppy turbo petrol engine. Maruti Suzuki exports many models from India to numerous parts of the world, including Australia. For now, let us delve into the details of the latest crash test report.

Maruti Fronx Struggles at ANCAP

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx bagged a poor 1-star safety rating at the ANCAP. This incorporates 19.30 points out of 40 (48%) in Adult Occupant Protection, 20.06 out of 49 points (40%) in Child Occupant Protection, 41.39 points out of 63 (65%) in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 10.03 points out of 18 (55%) in Safety Assist. These are clearly below-average scores, which is why the overall score is 1-star. Additionally, the test was overshadowed by a rather rare occurrence.

During ANCAP’s full-width frontal test, the rear passenger seatbelt retractor of the Suzuki Fronx failed. This is a serious matter and something that doesn’t occur often. This resulted in an uncontrolled seatbelt release where the rear dummy became unrestrained. Consequently, it struck the rear of the front seat. ANCAP has notified both the Australian and New Zealand government vehicle safety regulators about the seatbelt failure. ANCAP is of the opinion that adult and child passengers should not travel in the rear seats of the Suzuki Fronx until the reason for the failure has been determined and relevant rectifications have been carried out.

Finally, ANCAP advises consumers to be aware of this component failure if they are considering buying the Maruti Suzuki Fronx prior to Suzuki demonstrating that the component failure has been investigated and addressed. Note that the model that was test had dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting airbags, Autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User and Junction Assist) as well as a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK), and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) with a speed sign recognition system as standard.

My View

It is extremely concerning that a seatbelt failure occurred on the Suzuki Fronx during the ANCAP crash test. Admittedly, I have not heard about such an event in my 5-year-old career. Hence, I can only hope that a thorough investigation is launched to get to the bottom of this. Remember, safety is the most crucial aspect of road traffic. I shall update this post once more details emerge.
