The Indian automobile giant has been growing leaps and bounds in international markets like South Africa and Australia in recent times
Mahindra has come up with a new assembly plant in Durban, South Africa. This marks a huge chapter in the company’s existence in the region. In the last few years, the Indian automobile giant has been expanding its footprint in South Africa. In fact, its latest breed of vehicles, like the XUV700, Scorpio N and XUV3XO, have been doing a great job to impress the customers and car reviewers alike. These are the prime reasons for its massive growth in recent times. For now, let us delve deep into the details of this case.
Mahindra Opens New Assembly Plant in South Africa
As per the specifics via the official Mahindra South Africa handle on Instagram, the Indian car marque has inaugurated a new purpose-built Vehicle Assembly Facility at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone in Durban. It is a state-of-the-art plant, which bears a capacity to produce over 1,000 Pik Up models each month. This includes single-cab and double-cab versions. Evidently, this is a huge occasion for the fastest-growing vehicle brand in South Africa. Also, it showcases Mahindra’s burgeoning dominance in the international markets after being wildly successful here.
The caption of the post reads, “We were honoured to welcome distinguished guests, including Cyril Xaba, Mayor of eThekwini, and Rev Musa Zondi, MEC of KZN Province, to celebrate this milestone with us.” This new unit is located near Mahindra’s original 2018 assembly plant and will result in a significant scale-up in both capacity and technical sophistication. To keep the prices competitive, Mahindra is also steadily increasing the level of locally sourced components. Earlier this year, Mahindra partnered with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to launch a feasibility study into building a full-scale manufacturing plant in the country.
Speaking on this occasion, Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, remarked, “Our original facility played a pivotal role in establishing our local footprint. As demand for our locally assembled Pik Up range continued to rise, we needed a facility with the scale, flexibility, and technology to meet future growth while maintaining world-class quality.” Clearly, exciting times are ahead for Mahindra in South Africa.
