India is home to creative minds and we see examples of that on a daily basis
In this post, we take a look at the details of an instance where a man ends up creating ethanol-free petrol for his Maruti 800 at home. We know that the E20 petrol is the new normal in today’s day and age. It is, essentially, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. There was a massive buzz around the recent decision of the government to make it compulsory for every petrol station to only offer E20 fuel. However, after a robust backlash from the car owners, the decision was scrapped. Still, we see most petrol pumps supplying E20 fuel.
Man Creates Ethanol-Free Petrol For His Maruti 800
This post stems from the YouTube channel of Ajay Kaith. He uses a Maruti 800 and creates interesting vlogs around it. I must mention here that the biggest issue with making every fuel station in the country offer only E20 petrol is that a vast majority of vehicles on the road in India are not E20-compliant. Hence, it becomes a problem for them since the engine components can get damaged in the long run due to rusting or other issues. In order to create a homemade solution, this prominent YouTuber has come up with an innovative idea.
He went to the petrol station and filled 40 litres of petrol into small containers. He brought these home and conducted a chemistry experiment. Using a separating funnel, he began the process of extracting ethanol from petrol. For the unversed, a separating funnel is used to separate immiscible liquids depending on their densities. Hence, the denser liquid settles at the bottom, while the lighter liquid floats on the top. Using a stopcock at the bottom, the denser liquid is drained out.
Following this concept, the YouTuber was able to remove the ethanol and only the pure petrol was left. He collected the pure petrol and compared to the original E20 fuel he had purchased earlier. As the name suggests, the amount of petrol, which was left after this process, was around 80%. Needless to say, some petrol is lost during the separation process. It is understandable that the Maruti 800 doesn’t possess an E20-compatible engine. Therefore, the host will fill his Maruti 800 with pure petrol.

As someone who has tracked India’s evolving fuel landscape for over a decade and a half, I find this experiment fascinating but also concerning. While the ingenuity of Indian car owners never ceases to impress me, tampering with fuel composition outside controlled environments is far from advisable. The transition to E20 fuel is inevitable, and the real need of the hour is better manufacturer support and awareness around compatibility, especially for the millions still driving older cars like the Maruti 800.
