MS Dhoni Says EVs Not The Solution

MS Dhoni is a man who loves to be in touch with the latest happenings around the world and his opinions on EVs are pretty perceptive

Captain Cool, MS Dhoni shared some interesting thoughts about how EVs are not the solution to tackle the global mobility issues resulting in global warming and environmental degradation. EVs are regarded as the ‘cleaner’ solutions to curb vehicular pollution. The internal combustion engine emits a lot of pollution which is why the governments across the world keep introducing stricter emission norms year after year. To move away from all that, electric cars were long touted as the solution. But there are distinct challenges with those too. Dhoni points out a major one.

This post has been shared by theindianmotorheads on Instagram. It is a snippet from a long interview with MS Dhoni. In this section of the post, he is talking about EVs and IC engines. He starts by giving an example of cassette players, pen drives, floppy disks, etc. He is talking about how the next generation of people around 2050 won’t have an idea of what internal combustion engine-powered cars are. Looking at the current scenario, it looks like by 2050, most countries in the world would have transformed to having just EVs.

But Dhoni points out a relevant point. He says that EVs can’t be the solution if the electricity to power the electric cars is derived from non-renewable sources. That is currently the case for the most part. The electricity is generated using coal which is the source of pollution, to begin with. Unless we shift to renewable sources of energy to generate power to charge electric vehicles, they can’t be truly considered ‘Green’. That is something that a lot of people don’t consider when talking about EVs. Hence, it is a great thing to keep in mind when discussing the future of electric mobility.

What We Think

As someone who is in touch with the latest happenings in this industry, we know that the crucial aspect in the mass adoption of EVs is the fact that there have to be more and more electricity sources powered by renewable energy. Also, mass adoption requires rapid development of the infrastructure like DC fast charging stations, low initial costs and more. These will be addressed in times to come. By 2050, there would definitely be a ton of EVs on the roads and most carmakers would have likely achieved their carbon-neutrality plans.
