New Maruti Swift Gets CNG Variant – As Cheap to Run As Last-gen Diesel?

New Maruti Swift CNG Cheaper Than Diesel Model Ranbir Singh

With a certified mileage of 32.85 km/kg, the new Maruti Swift CNG turns out to be as cheap to run as the diesel variant available on the earlier generation!

The latest-gen Maruti Swift made its market debut back in May. Even as the new iteration made headlines for its evolved design, three-pot motor and a stronger safety net, its stellar frugality easily stole the show. With an ARAP-certified fuel mileage of 24.8 kmpl/25.75 kmpl (MT/AMT), the new Swift went on to become one of the most fuel-efficient cars of the country. I drove the new car in the morning Bengaluru traffic, and even took it on the nearby e-way, and experienced the ‘Maruti magic’ with the MID showing an average fuel economy of over 20 kmpl. Truly, the latest version of the popular B1-segmenter is more frugal than any of its rivals. But now, Maruti Suzuki seems has outdone itself by launching a CNG variant with a certified mileage of a whopping 32.85 km/kg. With such efficiency, one would ignore the absence of a diesel variant. Or will he? Let’s find out!

New Maruti Swift CNG Running Cost Compared to Erstwhile Diesel Variant

Before I detail the specifications of the new variant, allow me to make some quick calculations. At present, a kilo of CNG costs Rs 76.59 in Delhi. With a mileage of 32.85 km/kg, the new version ends up offering a running cost of just Rs 2.33. Back in the day, the diesel variant of the last-get Maruti Swift had a certified mileage of 28.4 kmpl. Back in 2018, the price of the stickier fuel was Rs 66.36. Quick calculation shows this car had a running cost of Rs 2.33. With this, it’s quite clear that the new CNG version turns out to be as easy on the wallet as the diesel version of the last-get model. Add to this the fact that the 10-year Diesel ban prevalent in Delhi-NCR pretty much ruins the resale value. More importantly, CNG is a cleaner fuel, and helps you do your bit for the environment.

Powering the New Maruti Swift CNG is a dual-fuel 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, Z Series petrol engine. While the petrol version offers 80 bhp and 112Nm, the CNG model outputs 68.8 bhp and 101.8Nm. The S-CNG model is available in three variants: V, V(O), and Z. This is a welcome change from the options available on the last generation model. The rising demand for CNG cars in the private market is pushing all carmakers to introduce them even in the higher trims. So, the buyers of the CNG model no longer make do with no-frills versions and instead enjoy many bells and whistles. Overall, I feel the launch of the New Maruti Swift S-CNG will help the latest-gen hatchback further consolidate its hot-seller status.
