The new Nissan Magnite has been launched in India with the addition of new-age features and aesthetic alterations

In this post, I am comparing the new Nissan Magnite with the Maruti Swift. While these belong to two completely different market segments, the price overlap is huge. As a result, many buyers can experience confusion while selecting between these two compelling alternatives. Nissan has always played on the fact that it is offering a compact SUV at the price point of a hatchback. In fact, that has been the main attraction of the Magnite in our market. On the other hand, Swift is among the most successful products in the country ever. It is currently on sale in its 4th-generation avatar. Let us compare the two in terms of specs, prices, features, design and safety.

New Nissan Magnite vs Maruti Swift – Price

We know that price is the most critical aspect while choosing a new car in India. The newly launched Nissan Magnite retails between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 11.50 lakh, ex-showroom. Interestingly, the Japanese auto giant has been able to keep the price unchanged in comparison to the outgoing model. On the other hand, the Maruti Swift retails between Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 9.59 lakh, ex-showroom. It is interesting to see that the base model of the Magnite is even cheaper than the Swift.

New Nissan Magnite vs Maruti Swift – Specs and Mileage

This is a clear point of distinction between the two vehicles. Let us commence with the Nissan Magnite. Things remain the same under the hood in comparison to the outgoing model. Hence, you will still find a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine in two states of tune – with and without a turbocharger. The power and torque outputs stand at the familiar 71 hp and 96 Nm, AND 99 hp and 152 Nm (160 Nm with CVT), respectively. Complimenting these engines are a 5-speed manual, and an AMT or CVT automatic gearbox option. It ensures that all sorts of customers’ needs are taken care of. Nissan claims a mileage of 20 km/l with the manual and 17.4 km/l with the CVT automatic. The Magnite comes with 3 years / 1,00,000 km standard warranty which can be extended to an additional 3 years / 1,00,000 km.

On the other hand, the Maruti Swift carries one of the most fuel-efficient powertrains in the country. There is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z12E naturally aspirated petrol engine which generates a decent 82 PS and 112 Nm of peak power and torque. This engine can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. However, the main highlight of this mill is its 25.75 km/l mileage with the automatic and 24.8 km/l mileage with the manual. In fact, this is the main reason for the massive success of the Swift in our country along with its sporty stance and the availability of new-age amenities.

Design and Dimensions

This is yet another area where these two vehicles are completely distinct to one another. The Magnite is a compact SUV and has an appropriate appearance. At the front, it gets a colossal grille section with metallic elements on either side, a rugged skid plate section with integrated fog lamps and LED DRLs on the extreme edges of the bumper. Up top, there is a sleek headlamp cluster which looks almost similar to the outgoing model. The side profile contains rugged side body claddings and wheel arches with 16-inch alloy wheels. The black side pillars and roof elevate the sporty demeanour of the SUV. At the rear, the SUV offers new clear-lens M-shaped signature LED taillamps and a sporty bumper.

On the other hand, the Swift continues to carry that sporty appearance which we are all used to for a long time. The front fascia consists of LED DRLs integrated inside the main headlamp cluster, a broad grille, fog lamps and a splitter-like section underneath the bumper. On the sides, we are greeted with stylish alloy wheels and black side pillars. Finally, the rear section contains prominent LED taillamps and an adventurous bumper section. All in all, both these vehicles have their own road presence.

My View

Let me start this conclusion by saying that you can’t go wrong with either of these compelling propositions. There are distinct characteristics of both these cars. Depending on your application and budget, you should select one. For instance, if you are on a strict budget and want excellent mileage, going for the Swift makes a lot of sense. On the other hand, if you want the practicality and road presence of an SUV and have a slightly higher budget, the new Nissan Magnite should be your pick. I would suggest you visit your nearest showrooms to experience these two in the flesh.
