Tata Punch EV Mileage Test

This latest video by a prominent automobile vlogger tests the real-world driving range of the Tata Punch EV. It marks the debut of Tata’s electric vehicle dedicated pure EV architecture known as acti.ev. This platform boasts unique advantages when compared to adapted platforms from internal combustion engine (ICE) models, distinguishing it from counterparts like the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV, which share platforms with their traditional combustion engine counterparts. Let us take a look at what actual range you can expect in everyday conditions.

Tata Punch EV Real-World Driving Range

This post comes from Rajni Chaudhary on YouTube. She takes the EV on a drive from 99% SoC (State-of-Charge). As soon as she changes the drive modes, the expected range changes. There are three modes – Eco, City and Sport. In Eco mode, you will be able to squeeze out the maximum range with limited power. On the other hand, the range will be minimal in Sport mode. However, the performance will be the best in this mode. During her journey, she drives mostly on a highway with open stretches of road, as well as mild traffic. Hence, it replicates what most people will experience daily. Although she didn’t drive it till empty, it was suggesting a range of around 350 km with the 35 kWh battery pack in Eco mode. This is acceptable. Note that the company claims 421 km in ideal conditions.

Specs

The Punch EV has transitioned to a dedicated pure EV architecture, presenting buyers with a choice between two battery pack options โ€“ 25 kWh and 35 kWh. The smaller battery pack yields a range of 315 km (MIDC), while the larger one extends the range to an impressive 421 km on a single charge. These batteries offer two e-Drive options โ€“ a 60 kW (80 hp) PMSM AC with 114 Nm and a 90 kW (120 hp) PMSM AC with 190 Nm peak power and torque. This configuration results in a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 140 km/h.

Both the battery pack and electric motor possess an IP67 rating, ensuring resistance to water and dust. To enhance buyer confidence, there is an 8-year or 1,60,000 km warranty. In the Long Range (LP) version, buyers can choose between a 3.3 kW and a 7.2 kW AC fast charger, along with a 50 kW DC fast charger. Utilizing the latter, the EV can be charged from 10% to 80% in a swift 56 minutes.

Author’s Note

We must keep in mind that the companies test the range of EVs under ideal conditions. Depending on the climatic environments, driving mannerisms and drive modes, the final real-world range will alter. Still, to expect a range of around 350 km in real-world conditions with the larger battery pack is decent. Still, you will need to plan your trips in advance to ensure that you don’t get stranded on the road. With time, the charging infrastructure is being developed to tackle this issue too.
