Tesla's first offering in India is likely to be the USD 25,000 (Rs 20 Lakh) Model 2.

The upcoming entry-level Tesla model, which will likely cost โ‚ฌ25,000 (Rs 20 lakh+), is set to make a splash as a stylish two-door car. Itโ€™s exciting news, especially for Indian consumers, as sources suggest its launch in Germany will be followed by an introduction in the Indian market. This move aligns with Teslaโ€™s strategy to broaden its global footprint and cater to diverse markets. While the entry-level model is yet to receive a name, itโ€™s often been referred to as the โ€˜Model 2.โ€™

According to sources, the budget-friendly Tesla Model 2 first launch in Germany and subsequently make it to India. The speculation suggests that this electric car might take the form of a two-door SUV or sedan. If these plans materialize, it will mark Teslaโ€™s second model for India, following the Model Y, as reported exclusively by Moneycontrol.

The Rs 20 Lakh Tesla Model 2

Globally, Tesla is gearing up to unveil an entry-level model that is currently unnamed. It is designed to compete with models like the Renault 5 and VW ID.2. Elon Musk has hinted at an attractive $25,000 price point. The Model 2 aims to broaden Teslaโ€™s market reach and enhance accessibility to electric mobility on a global scale. In the Indian context, a price tag of Rs 20 lakh positions it as a compelling option against premium EVs like the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. While it may be pricier than the Tata Nexon EV, the Model 2 could serve as an enticing entry point for early adopters seeking a taste of upscale, world-class electric vehicles.

Teslaโ€™s Expansion Plans

Tesla has committed a โ‚ฌ5 billion investment for the establishment of its Gigafactory in Brandenburg, Germany, marking its inaugural European facility. The plant currently produces the Model Y crossover, with plans to expand its capacity to 1 million units annually. Furthermore, Tesla is preparing to introduce the โ‚ฌ25,000 car from this facility in the near future. Meanwhile, our trade minister Piyush Goyal had informs that Tesla is planning to double the number of components it imports from India. โ€œProud to see the growing importance of auto component suppliers from India in the Tesla EV supply chain. It is on its way to double its components imports from India,โ€ Goyal posted on X, earlier called Twitter, after visiting Teslaโ€™s manufacturing facility in Fremont, California.

As per Goyal, Tesla aims to source components worth between $1.7- $1.9 billion from India this year. Noteworthily, it bought $1 billion of components last year. As per Bloomberg, the carmaker will soon forge an agreement with India that will let it ship its electric cars to the country from next year and set up a factory within two years.
