The latest iteration of the Tata Altroz comes with a slew of new-age amenities along with a tweaked design to attract more buyers
In this post, we compare the Tata Altroz facelift and the Maruti Baleno in terms of price, specs and features. Note that the premium hatchback segment has been quite popular in our market for a long time now. Cars like the Altroz, Baleno and i20 have been doing decent sales despite an onslaught from the SUVs. Somehow, these cars position themselves perfectly for all those who want something more than an entry-level vehicle and a bit less than an SUV. For now, let us get into the specifics of both these popular cars.
Tata Altroz Facelift vs Maruti Baleno – Price
The new Tata Altroz facelift ranges between Rs 6.89 lakh and Rs 11.49 lakh, ex-showroom. Remember, these are almost similar prices in comparison to the outgoing model. On the other hand, the Maruti Baleno starts at Rs 6.70 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 9.92 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, the Baleno certainly has an edge towards the higher end of the portfolio in this regard although I must mention here that the Altroz offers a diesel mill, which is missing from the Baleno.

Tata Altroz Facelift vs Maruti Baleno – Specs
Let us now come to what powers the two premium hatchbacks. The Tata Altroz facelift possess three powertrain alternatives – a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, which makes 88 PS and 115 Nm (the same engine also offers a CNG avatar with 73.5 PS and 103 Nm) and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, which generates a decent 90 PS and 200 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. The petrol mill can be paired with either a 5-speed manual, an all-new 5-speed AMG or a 6-speed DCA automatic transmission, while the CNG and diesel engines can only accommodate a 5-speed manual gearbox. In any case, the buyers get a wide range of combinations to choose from as per their requirements.
On the other hand, the Maruti Baleno is available with a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder K Series petrol engine, which produces a healthy 90 PS and 113 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This mill pairs with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic transmission. Those concerned with the running costs can even opt for the same engine with CNG fuel, in which case the power and torque figures drop down to 77 PS and 99 Nm, respectively. This ensures that the needs of all kinds of buyers can be met.

My View
Choosing between these two vehicles can be quite confusing. In essence, both of these are extremely capable and compelling in their own regard. If you want a car with high mileage, latest features and tried-and-tested powertrains, the Maruti Baleno makes a lot of sense. However, if you need a fresh product and are looking for a diesel engine, you are left with only a single option. In any case, you can’t go wrong with either of these.
