Following the footsteps of several other luxury carmakers, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will source the platforms for its future electric vehicles from China. Confirming the previous rumors about Jaguar Land Rover adopting Chery’s platforms, he revealed that the next-gen BEVs and PHEVs from the Tata Motors-owned luxury car marque will make use of E0X and M3X modular architecture that underpin Chinese cars like the Chery Tiggo 9, Exlantix ET and Luxeed 7.

An Agreement Between Indian Tata Motors and Chinese Chery Group

Chery’s high-end brand Exeed recently shared that it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Jaguar Land Rover. This agreement allows JLR to use Exeed’s platforms to create its future vehicles. Formally, it is an agreement between JLR and Exeed. However, that Chinese brand is fully owned by Chery Group. So, frankly speaking, we can call it an agreement between Indian Tata Motors and Chinese Chery Group.

It’s also worth mentioning that Jaguar Land Rover isn’t the only renowned brand to make use of Chinese modular platforms for its New Enever Vehicles. In fact, it’s a rising trend among many global players to look at China for sourcing EV architectures. For instance, Renault cars will make use of Geely’s CMG platform while Volkswagen will soon use E/E platform Xpeng. Similarly, Audi will adopt iO Origin platform from SAIC. Also, it’s not the first time JLR will work in close ties with Chery to fuel its growth in the Chinese carmaket. The two carmakers first formed a JV back in 2012. As a part of this joint vehicle, a jointly-owned factory was set up in 2014, wherein Chery manufactures JLR cars. Also, the latter has helped the former with fine-tuning of suspension setups. Needless to say, Land Rover vehicles have even become a huge ‘inspiration’ for Chery car designers

Our View

It’s noteworthy that Jaguar Land Rover hasn’t been as quick to introduce new energy vehicles as some of its peers. The Jaguar I-Pace, which is the only BEV in its portfolio, is already over half a decade old. Thanks to the increased adoption of BEVs in markets like that of China, JLR has been witnessing dropping sales. This is exactly why Tata Motors is joining hands with Chery. Likely, the M3X and E0X-based models from JLR will initially sell only in the Chinese market.
