Tata Motors has been one of the fastest-growing carmakers in the country in the recent past. Safety and feature-rich offerings are part of the reasons for this massive success. Tata wears the crown of manufacturing the first made-in-India car to score a 5-Star Safety Rating at the Global NCAP with the Nexon compact SUV. It replicated that with India’s only 5-star rated premium hatchback, the Altroz. Both these products have seen massive growth in their respective segments as a result. The formal flagship offering from Tata, the Harrier, was also extremely successful along with the recently launched 7-seat version of it, the iconic Safari. Needless to say, the Tiago and Tigor cars are very popular in the lower segments of our market. In the past, Tata has tasted success with the Dark Edition of the Harrier and it trademarked the “Dark Edition” moniker for all its products.

As a result of this, we might finally see the Dark Edition versions of two of its popular products, Nexon and Altroz. The images of these products have surfaced online as they are arriving at the Tata dealerships near you. So, there is nothing speculative about this. Now, what do these editions bring with them as updates, let us find out?

The general update includes exteriors changes for any model. For instance, there will be blacked-out bits all across the exterior body of the Nexon including the front bumper, grille, maybe headlamps, various badges on the sides signifying the Dark Edition variant, rear body panel, etc. These changes will follow on the inside as well. There might be an all-black interior theme that will encompass black upholstery and dashboard design. The overall feel of the cabin will tend to be sporty which is what many enthusiasts prefer. We don’t expect any changes on the features list or the powertrains.

This means that the Tata Nexon will come with the option of either a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or a 1.2-litre turbo diesel making 120 hp and 170 Nm and 110 hp and 260 Nm of peak output respectively. There will continue to be the options of either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox and the prices might see a bit of a premium over the corresponding price of that variant.

Tata Altroz Dark Edition

The Altroz is already churning out quite the volumes and also outsold the Hyundai i20 recently. This signifies the popularity of Altroz among Indian buyers. Addition the Dark Edition to the lineup of the Altroz will further enhance its appeal. Like the Nexon and Harrier, the exteriors of the Altroz will see the major changes due to this new edition in form of a blacked-out front grille, body panels, rear, along with rebadging on the sides. The interior, too, will feature the sporty all-black theme for in-cabin materials and upholstery. These changes are more likely to attract some young buyers because of the sporty element. The Nexon costs between Rs 7.19 lakh and Rs 12.95 lakh, ex-showroom at the moment.

There are three engine options on offer with the Altroz including a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine making 86 PS and 113 Nm, a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine making 110 PS and 140 Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel engine making 90 PS and 200 Nm of peak power and peak torque respectively. There is the option of a sole 5-speed manual gearbox with all the variants of the Altroz. The prices will see a slight increase for the Dark Edition for every variant. Currently, the Altroz ranges from Rs 5.29 lakh to Rs 9.55 lakh, ex-showroom.
