Tata Punch EV has been spied testing in the real world recently. Punch is the most popular micro SUV in the country. Its sales have been quite impressive right from the time of its launch. Its 5-star safety rating at the Global NCAP, bold styling, latest tech and convenience features, and the options of multiple powertrains are some of the reasons for its mad success. Going forward, Tata Motors will also include an electric version of the Punch. It will borrow most of its elements from the Tiago and Tigor EVs. Here are the details.

These images come from Instagram. They capture the electric micro SUV on the side of the road. As is the case with most test mules, it is also wearing heavy camouflage. But the silhouette gives away the credentials of the model. Also, since there are no facelift versions of the Punch on the anvil, this has to be the electric version. Tata already offers the electric Tiago and Tigor which is around the same price range as the Punch. That is why it could borrow a lot of elements from them including the powertrain.

Specs

The Punch EV might be equipped with a 25.58 kWh Lithium-ion battery, which could give it a range of approximately 320-350 km. The electric motor is expected to provide a respectable 74 hp and 114 Nm of peak power and torque. Its front wheels would be powered by a single-speed transmission, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 80 km/h in about 13.5 seconds. The top speed is projected to be around 85 km/h, focusing on maximizing the driving range. This model will compete with the Citroen e-C3, priced between Rs 11.50 lakh and Rs 12.76 lakh, ex-showroom.

What We Think

Tata Motors holds a significant position in our country’s electric vehicle (EV) sector. The Tata Nexon EV has achieved the highest sales among EVs in our market up until now. Tata also offers other EV models, such as the Tiago EV and Tigor EV. Converting existing models into EVs has proven to be a successful strategy for the Indian automaker. Now, they plan to apply this strategy to the Punch model, and there is no apparent reason why it shouldn’t be successful again. This move will provide more choices for people seeking affordable EVs within the Tata brand. We’ll keep an eye out for when the Punch EV becomes available on the roads.
