Big Boy Toyz is one of the biggest used luxury car dealerships in the country. During one part of their interview, Jatin comes up with a prominent anecdote involving the Mercedes Maybach 62 of Vijay Mallya. He mentions that his company had Mallya’s car up for sale for around Rs 1.50 Crore. Obviously, being a famous person’s car, there were numerous interested buyers.
As is often the case, they were all negotiating for the price or for better deals in terms of service. However, when Vijay Mallya’s recent podcast with Raj Shamani went online, the demand for that car increased exponentially. As a result, the same customers who were trying to bring down the price to strike a deal ended up offering more money. In fact, Jatin claims that some people offered up to Rs 2.25 Crore for the car. Shockingly, one person simply asked Jatin to name a price and he was willing to give it. That is how public perception works.
My View
I believe this is a great story of what internet fame can do to a person’s image overnight. We know that when something goes viral in today’s day and age, a person’s life can transform in hours. Vijay Mallya was out of the public eye for many years. We know that he moved to London a few years ago. However, after his podcast, he became a topic of conversation for millions of people, particularly in India. Hence, the demand for his rare luxury car surged. That is the kind of world we live in.
