VinFast to Gradually Establish Local Production

VinFast is exploring the possibility of utilizing the Ford India factory in Chennai as part of its global expansion plans. In India, they intend to commence with fully assembled imports and knocked-down kits, with a gradual shift towards establishing local manufacturing facilities in the coming years.

Commenting on VinFast’s interest in the Chennai plant, a Ford spokesperson commented, “We are actively considering options for the Chennai plant and have no additional details to share.” When it comes to capacity, Ford’s Chennai facility has the capability to manufacture up to 210,000 units. However, VinFast is contemplating a more modest operation in recognition of India’s developing electric vehicle market. Acquiring the existing Ford factory is viewed as a cost-effective solution compared to constructing a new greenfield facility.

VinFast Targets Production Capacity of Over 100,000

In India, VinFast aims to set up a manufacturing plant with a capacity of at least 100,000 units. Their approach involves initially catering to the premium market segment by importing fully assembled vehicles. Eventually, they plan to venture into the core B-segment, which is expected to yield substantial sales in the future. VinFast, originating in Vietnam, has achieved significant success and has also expanded its footprint to the United States and Europe. Their electric vehicle lineup, comprising models such as the VF e34, VF 8, VF 5, and VF 9, underscores their unwavering dedication to sustainable mobility.
