The 7 seat version of the Wagon R will boast of premium interiors and will take on the upcoming Renault Triber.

The talks of Maruti Suzuki to likely introduce the 7-seater version of the Wagon R had been going on for a long time now. While we had been speculating many things, the 7-seat Wagon R is now ready for launch and will likely arrive in June, 2019. What’s most interesting is that Maruti might exclusively sell the 7-seat Wagon through Nexa – Maruti’s premium retail outlet.

The new generation of the Wagon R was built on a slightly larger platform and even came with a bigger engine from the last generation. The reason why Maruti Suzuki did so is that to be able to build a longer wheelbase version of Wagon R which could sport 3-rows of seating and have the USP of 7 seats.

Now, whether Maruti will offer the vehicle as a premium Nexa product or a regular Arena product is something that Maruti is still finalizing. The Wagon R sales have shrunk after the introduction of the new generation because the new car is bigger and is positioned higher than the previous model.

The last generation Wagon R was a huge volume generator for Maruti Suzuki given its entry point and the new 7-seat Wagon R could very well suffice for the numbers of the Wagon R, if it is sold through the regular Arena outlet.

On the other hand, Maruti wants to sell the new sub-4m MPV as a Nexa Product as the new car will come fairly well loaded and will sport a more premium interior too. It will also put the new 7-seat Wagon R in a competitive position to take on the upcoming Renault Triber, which too will boast of 7-seats.

If at all the new 7-seat Wagon R is sold from the Nexa outlet, Maruti will very likely give it a new name to differentiate it as a Nexa product. Maruti also needs to differentiate the new car from its other 7-seater MPV, the Ertiga, which is an Arena product. This is why it makes all the more sense for Maruti to sell the new car as a Nexa product which will feature a slightly more plush interiors.

The 7-seat Wagon R is expected to be powered by the 1.2L, K12M, petrol engine found in the Wagon R which produces 82 bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque. Expect the 5-speed AMT/AGS transmission to be offered as well. In the future, there would be a hybrid and also an EV variant of the same car.

When launched, the 7-seat version of the Wagon R will take on the Datsun Go+ which is also a 7-seater MPV and has been on Indian roads for quite some time now. Some other manufacturers are also looking into this sub-4m MPV space, one of them being Renault, who is going to launch the Triber sub-4m MPV very soon.
