BMW has revealed the 2020 4 Series Coupe and while the rest of the car looks really good, the grille has become an overkill now. The rest of the car is however still as amazing and perhaps even better.

After a lot of anticipation and teasers, BMW has finally revealed the 2020 4 Series Coupe. The styling has to be the biggest talking point of the new BMW 4 Series as the grille keeps getting uglier and uglier. Well, for some at least. BMW however says that the dynamic performance has been the center of improvement for the new car. The grille on the 4 Series harks back to the likes of the 328 and the 328 Homage Concept car from more recent time but in our opinion, it does not fit so well on a modern BMW.

Anyhow, the new 4 Series is based on BMW’s CLAR platform that also underpins the new BMW 3 Series. The new 4 Series Coupe has done away with some traditional BMW styling cues and we must say that it really looks the part. The production car is strikingly close to the Concept 4 that was showcased last year and if you are able to look past the grille, the rest of the car is very beautiful indeed. The side and rear profile of the car are very sleek and the long bonnet line gives the car very beautiful proportions. The sleek LED headlamps and tail lamps also look very sporty.

In terms of dimensions, the new 4 Series Coupe is actually larger than its predecessor. It’s taller by 6mm, longer by 128mm, wider by 27mm and the wheelbase now stands at 2,851mm. In fact, the wheelbase is now identical to the 3-Series. For improved dynamic performance, BMW has gone the way to reduce the weight of the car by using lighter materials.

On the inside, the 4 Series Coupe has a dashboard design similar to newer generation BMW cars. There are two digital screens for the instrument console and the infotainment system. There’s minimal use of buttons on the center console and the start button now lies on the center console next to the latest version of the drive selector. Thankfully, there’s a traditional gear lever as well. The BMW iDrive system is in its latest generation and there’s a bigger headsup display available as an option as well. There are also four seats inside this two-door car.

Under the hood, the new BMW 4 Series Coupe features three petrol options and one diesel engine. The petrol engine options includes a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that comes in two states of tune – 187PS (420i) and 262PS (430i). There’s also a 3.0-litre straight six turbo-petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system (M440i) that puts out almost 380PS of power. It also comes equipped with BMW’s xDrive system. The diesel engine option is a 2.0L unit with the 48V mild-hybrid system (420d) that produces 193PS of power.

BMW has also said that they will be adding two six-cylinder diesel engine options to the 4 Series Coupe lineup by March 2021. All the engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Aside from the M440i, all-wheel-drive is standard across all models while four-wheel-drive is optional in the 430i and 420d. Additionally, there’s an M-Sport package which comes with a quicker gearbox, launch control and a new drive mode called ‘Sprint’. Its also adds M Sport brakes, a new design trim, and a “sporting engine soundtrack” in Sport mode. The new 4 Series will go on sale in the international markets from October this year but there are no words of it coming to India yet. However, considering the BMW did offer the previous version of the M4 in India, it wouldn’t hurt very much to be optimistic.
