Maruti Jimny and Fronx are the two latest entrants from the largest carmaker in the country in its already expansive portfolio.

In a weird experiment, a YouTuber decided to test the thickness of the sheetmetal of Maruti Jimny and Fronx. The Jimny holds a prestigious position as one of the world’s most renowned 3-door lightweight SUVs designed for off-roading adventures. With a legacy spanning over 50 years, it has garnered immense popularity. In an exciting development for the Indian market, the 5-door variant of the Jimny has recently been introduced for the first time ever. On the other hand, Fronx is a crossover hatchback that is based on the Baleno premium hatchback and is, essentially, a more feature-loaded version of it. Here are the details of their body structure.

Maruti Jimny & Fronx Sheetmetal

This video has been uploaded by Motor Torsion on YouTube. It captures the host with a special device that is used in industrial applications to measure the thickness of any metallic component. On this occasion, the YouTuber decided to use it to test the thickness of the sheetmetal with which the Jimny and Fronx have been constructed. To test the thickness of the entire vehicle, the host picks up each section individually. This includes the bonnet, the bumper, the fenders, the door panels, the roof, the side body panel, the chassis, and various other components.

The results were quite shocking. Since the Jimmy is based on a ladder frame chassis, the overall thickness of all its components is higher than that of the Fronx. Such off-road-focused vehicles have more rugged components to withstand the impact during operations on harsh terrains. Concluding from the values recorded on the device, it is evident that all the components of the Jimny were slightly thicker than Fronx. The table below summarises the average values of individual sections of both vehicles.

What We Think

While this is a legitimate method of measuring the actual thickness of the sheetmetal of the vehicles, we must be careful not to take it as the sole factor in judging the build quality and safety rating of these cars. When automobiles go for this crash testing, there are various methods that are taken into consideration before awarding them an appropriate safety rating. Therefore, such experiments must be taken with a pinch of salt and not at face value. Still, we appreciate this practical experiment that was conducted by the YouTuber to give a general sense of how both these products are built. Also, the fact that one has a ladder frame construction and the other a monocoque, is partially responsible for this reading.
