Here’s another look at the Mahindra Thar 5-door being tested in challenging high-altitude conditions. The competition in the rugged and affordable off-road SUV category has heated up, particularly with the arrival of the 5-door Maruti Jimny. The Thar has dominated this segment for years, but as off-roading gains popularity, both the Thar and Jimny offer enthusiasts the confidence to explore remote areas. However, there’s still a gap in the market for a true off-road SUV under the Rs 20 lakh price range, and this is where the upcoming 5-door Thar based on the Scorpio N can make a difference. Let’s delve into the details of this exciting addition.

The Instragram post captures the 5-door version of the iconic SUV from various angles, showcasing its substantial side profile. However, it remains heavily camouflaged. Despite the concealment, the vehicle’s distinctive silhouette is clearly visible. Many exterior features seem consistent with the standard Thar, such as LED taillights and a rear-mounted spare wheel. Of particular note, the side profile displays the added doors and increased length of this variant. Impressively, the upcoming SUV appears to be as substantial as the Mahindra Scorpio N when observed in profile.

Specs

The 5-door Mahindra Thar should offer the same engine options as its 3-door counterpart. This includes a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel and a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine. The turbo-diesel engine delivers 130 hp and 320 Nm of torque, while the turbo-petrol engine provides 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Both engine variants come with a choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, featuring a low-range transfer case. Additionally, the vehicle incorporates a specialized center differential with mechanical locking capabilities, enabling 4×4 operation. The new model shares its underpinnings with the Scorpio N, contributing to its larger dimensions. Regarding pricing, existing Thar models range from Rs 10.98 lakh to Rs 16.94 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the 5-door version is expected to come at a slightly higher price point.

The growth of the niche off-roading segment is indeed heartening. With the growing interest of off-road enthusiasts in adventure activities, there’s a heightened demand for vehicles like the Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha, and Maruti Jimny. While the Thar has a historical stronghold in the segment, it has had limitations in terms of cabin space and practicality. The introduction of the 5-door version is poised to address this concern. While it may not be the most luxurious option in its price range, the extended wheelbase will offer ample space for the second row and cargo storage. We eagerly await the launch of the forthcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar.
