A growing trend among current Mahindra Thar owners is to install stylish LED headlamps soon after buying their SUV. This isn’t simply to improve the illumination but even to lend a premium touch to the aesthetics. Recognizing this habit of several Thar owners, Mahindra is set to equip the 5-door Thar model such these advanced headlamps. This revelation comes from one of the latest sightings. The Bi-Xenons and Mercedes G-Wagon-like LED DRLs are clearly visible on the heavily camouflaged test mule,

5-door Mahindra Thar

The competition in the budget-friendly off-road SUV segment has escalated with the launch of the 5-door Maruti Jimny. Prior to this, the Thar enjoyed an unchallenged market-dominance. We feel that vehicles like the Thar and Jimny play an important role in empowering enthusiasts have a taste of off-roading culture. However, a practical mid-size off-road SUV in the Rs 15-20 lakh bracket is still pending. This is where the 5-door Mahindra Thar can make an impact.

Despite the camouflage, the vehicle’s unique outline is clearly visible. Many of the exterior elements seem consistent with the regular Thar. However, the side view unveils the extra doors and increased length of this version. It’s evident that the upcoming SUV, when viewed from the side, appears to be as big as the Scorpio N. This similarity, though, is unsurprising given the platform sharing between the two SUVs.

Specifications

The 5-door Mahindra Thar will likely feature the same engine options as its 3-door counterpart. This includes a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel and a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine. The turbo-diesel delivers 130 hp and 320 Nm of torque, while the turbo-petrol offers 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission and a low-range transfer case. The vehicle also has a center differential for a high 4×4 capability. While the current Thar models are priced between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 16.94 lakh, the 5-door variant is expected to come at a slightly higher cost.

What We Think

While the headlamps aren’t the deciding factor towards purchase of a vehicle, we feel that the Bi-Xenon fixtures will surely enhance the visual appeal. Also, the factory-fitted G-Wagon-like headlamps will stop the owners to opt for aftermarket units. This, in our opinion, is a crucial step towards stopping owners from having their warranty voided. The Thar has held the top spot on the sales charts, but it has had some limitations when it comes to cabin space and practicality. The upcoming 5-door version aims to tackle these concerns. The extended wheelbase will offer more room for the second row and cargo storage.
