New Hyundai Creta NCAP Safety Rating

Our topic for a thorough discussion for today is – the New Hyundai Creta safety rating. Creta is the most successful mid-size SUV in India. It has been at the top of the monthly sales charts for many years now. Interestingly, this market segment is extremely crowded. Most car marques offer their product in this segment to take the crown away from the Creta. But somehow, the popularity of the Korean SUV is extremely high. The other prominent SUVs in this space include the Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, MG Astor, Honda Elevate, Citroen C3 Aircross, Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun. With such compelling offerings, it is impressive to see the Creta still reeling in the numbers month after month. For now, let us take a look at what to expect from the safety rating test of the mighty Creta.

New Hyundai Creta Safety Rating

Note that the latest iteration of the Hyundai Creta has not been crash-tested yet. However, it is the facelifted version of the model which brought a decent 3 stars at the Global NCAP back in 2022. We know that with facelift versions, there are hardly any fundamental changes to the vehicle. Still, Hyundai announced during the launch of this latest Creta that it now gets a reinforced monocoque. That should strengthen the body of the mid-size SUV. Hence, we can expect at least similar, if not better performance this time around. Note that in 2022, the Global NCAP protocols had been updated. If the Creta goes to the Bharat NCAP, it will undergo similar tests since it is based on the latest Global NCAP test. In any case, let us discuss the results of the previous NCAP test.

Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)

In the AOP category, the Creta secured a good 3-star safety rating. It bagged 8 points out of a possible 17. Note that this model of the Creta had 2 airbags as standard along with Seatbelt Reminder and Front Seatbelt Pretensioners. The vehicle underwent a partial frontal impact test at 64 km/h. The protection offered to the driver’s head was adequate and the passenger’s head was good. Both their necks showed good protection. However, the chest of the driver displayed marginal protection, while that of the passenger had good protection.

Their knees demonstrated marginal protection as they could impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the Tranfascia tube.Thereafter, the driver’s tibias showed weak and adequate protection while the passenger’s tibias showed good and adequate protection. The bodyshell of the Hyundai Creta was rated unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings. In fact, even the footwell area was rated as unstable. All these aspects contributed to a 3-star safety rating.

Child Occupant Protection (COP)

In the COP section, the pre-facelift Hyundai Creta received 3 stars. This derives from 28.29 points out of 49. The child seat restraints used are Britax Roemer Baby Safe and Britax Roemer Duo Plus. These are installed for an 18-month-old and 3-year-old child. The child seat for the 3-year-old was installed FWF using the adult seatbelt. It could not prevent excessive forward movement of the head, while the chest showed weak protection.

The seat for the 18-month-old was installed RWF with the adult seatbelt while offering good protection to the head and chest. Also, the CRS marking was permanent and the recommended CRSs didn’t show incompatibility. In the rear centre position, the Creta offers a lap belt. There are no ISOFIX anchorages as standard. All these factors ensured a 3-star safety rating. But thanks to the additional safety features and a revised monocoque, the new Hyundai Creta safety rating could be a tad higher in both the categories.

Our View

Hyundai Creta is the most successful mid-size SUV in our market. Its last safety rating was decent. As mentioned previously, the current version gets ADAS features and a reinforced monocoque. That is bound to enhance its strength and build quality. While I can’t infer anything before the official crash test at the Bharat NCAP, there is a high chance that it would replicate, or even better its performance in comparison to the pre-facelift model. In any case, we shall have to wait for the NCAP test but the signs look positive.
