The inaugural edition of the Bharat NCAP was introduced back in August 2023
The Bharat NCAP tests are slated to become even more stringent in the coming years. This Bharat NCAP 2.0 version will ensure additional and more comprehensive testing parameters to analyze the safety equipment and prowess of new cars thoroughly. In the last few years, I have witnessed immense interest among car buyers in the category of safety. We have seen more and more 5-star rated vehicles, especially from the indigenous brands. Hence, potential consumers take into consideration the safety rating of a car before making a purchase decision.
Bharat NCAP Tests to Get Tougher
According to the details mentioned in a report by Autocar India, the Bharat NCAP 2.0 will embody a few key updates to the existing assessment criteria. At present, the frontal test includes a partial collision (40%) of the vehicle with the barrier. However, with the new rules, a full impact will be mandatory. We know that the test results depend on the damage the dummies record during the front and side pole impact collisions. With the new regulations, there will be the use of more advanced dummies and stricter crash tests. As a consequence, more comprehensive and accurate safety data will be available.
In this day and age, we know that customers value the ADAS equipment a great deal. The Bharat NCAP 2.0 will include stricter and more advanced ADAS and driver assist evaluation. The cars will be put to the test for the efficiency of the ADAS functionalities. In this regard, the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) is actively preparing a new protocol to implement these changes. As per the report, the new protocols could come into effect by late 2027. Hence, there is enough time for the development and implementation of these key updates to make the entire assessment program more challenging.
My View
I welcome this announcement wholeheartedly. I have always harboured strong opinions regarding stricter safety test programs and traffic regulations. We know that India doesn’t possess a great image when it comes to road safety. While this primarily consists of disregarding traffic rules, a huge part of it also comes from a lack of availability of cars with high safety ratings. That’s why I have truly loved the fact that an indigenous process was put in place to better this aspect. We already see the results as carmakers have improved their standard safety fitments in all their cars. The new protocols will further nudge them to push the boundaries.
