We know that Tesla doesn’t sell the Cybertruck in India, which leaves influential personalities with no option but to import it
Veteran actor Sanjay Dutt was recently spotted using the futuristic Tesla Cybertruck. We know that the electric truck is not on sale in our market. Now, the Cybertruck has to be one of the most talked-about EVs in the last few years. Originally announced back in 2019, the launch was delayed considerably due to various reasons. Finally, it was launched in December 2023. Tesla officially entered the Indian market last year but is yet to start offering Cybertruck. For now, let us check out the details of this case.
Sanjay Dutt Seen in Tesla Cybertruck
The video stems from autojournal_india on Instagram. The visuals clearly show actor Sanjay Dutt appearing out of the Tesla Cybertruck in Mumbai. Interestingly, he emerges from the right side of the car, which confirms that this is a left-hand-drive model. Looking at the registration plate further informs us that this large electric truck has been imported from Dubai. In the last few years, this has become a common route for car enthusiasts to use an imported car in India without actually having to pay import duties and other taxes. A Carnet permit (passport for cars) is needed to import a vehicle to India for a period of 6 months without having to pay any duties.
It looks like Sanjay Dutt adopted the same approach to import a Cybertruck and use it in India. Once the allotted time period runs out, the vehicle will need to be re-exported. A security deposit is taken before importing the car, which is returned when the car returns to its native country. What is more impressive is the fact that this is not the first Cybertruck in India. A famous diamond merchant from Gujarat performed the same act to import it into our country. Apart from that, a prominent billionaire real estate businessman from Chennai allegedly purchased India’s first Tesla Cybertruck after paying around Rs 5 Crore for it. Note that in the international market, the price is around $115,000 (approx. Rs 1 Crore).
Tesla Cybertruck
The Tesla Cybertruck comes with a mammoth 122.4 kWh battery pack, which powers two or three electric motors, depending on the variant. In the most powerful settings, the EV generates a whopping 834 hp of maximum power. This propels the electric truck from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.6 seconds. Clearly, performance is one of its top highlights. Additionally, it gets a bulletproof body and a unique design for an unmatched road presence.

As someone who has tracked the Indian car market closely for over a decade and a half, this Cybertruck sighting perfectly highlights the gap between aspiration and availability in our EV space. The Carnet route has increasingly become the workaround for celebrities and HNIs who want global exotica without waiting for official launches. While the Cybertruck’s presence turns heads, it also underlines Tesla’s cautious, still-evolving India strategy. Until import duties and localisation hurdles are addressed, such sightings will remain spectacles, not signals of mainstream adoption.
