Hyundai is working on an all-new compact SUV based on its globally successful i20 hatchback. The upcoming Hyundai i20 SUV wasย spied testing earlier this year. The upcoming Hyundai i20 SUV will be sit close to the Creta in Hyundai’s product portfolio. In most likelihood, the upcoming compact SUV’s launch will happen by early 2018. As we said, the upcoming compact SUV will go on sale only in the markets where the Creta isn’t present. This means markets like that of India and China will miss out on this i20-based compact SUV.
The Hyundai i20 SUV will see itself slotted between the i20 Active and the Creta. It will rivals the likes of Renault Kaptur and the Nissan Juke. Much like the international-spec Creta, which is the ix25, even this Hyundai compact SUV could have an ‘ix’ nomenclature.

Hyundai i20 SUVย Engine
Powering the Hyundai i20 Compact SUV will be the same engines that power theย new i30. This means the new Hyundai SUV will come with 2 petrol and 1 diesel engine. While the petrol engines will displace 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre, the Diesel engine will be a 1.6-litre unit. As seen in the speculative renderings, the i20 SUV will be loosely based on the 2014ย Intrado concept.
Hyundai i20 SUVย Design
The i20 SUV will carry the latest iteration of Hyundai’s Fluidic design language. Highlight of the car’s exterior design will be the cascading effect grill that made its debut on the new i30. Apart from this, the car will also feature sleek headlamps along with chunky auxiliary lamps. The rear will feature LED taillamps and a chunky rear bumper. This compact SUV won’t look much like the Creta. However, akin to other Hyundai models, it will scoreย high on visual appeal.
The upcoming i20 SUV is likely to be more premium than the compact SUV that’s headed to India. The compact SUV for India could be based on theย Carlino concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. Even the Carlino is based on the i20 platform.
