2020 Yamaha MT-03

The 2020 Yamaha MT-03 has been unveiled globally and we could be getting this one in India. It now looks more like the MT-15 and MT-09 models.

Globally, Yamaha has now unveiled the literally elder brother of the MT-15, the 2020 Yamaha MT-03. It now looks completely different than the earlier-generation and becomes a part of the MT family, with the samurai-type headlamp style.

While Yamaha had earlier confirmed that it will be focusing on premium motorcycles for India, this could be one of it. Along with the 2020 Yamaha R3, we can also see the MT-03, at their expected launch at the 2020 Auto Expo.

According to Yamaha’s new ‘Call of the Blue’ plan, the two-wheeler manufacturer plans to launch a couple of premium motorcycles in India. The company has already stated that it will shift its focus from mass-market commuter motorcycles.

Yamaha MT-03 draws striking similarities from the younger MT-15. The traditional LED headlamp design and the fuel tank styling are the same. Being a naked streetfighter, it gets an upright stance with the single-piece handlebar.

The 2020 Yamaha MT-03 will use the slightly updated 321cc liquid-cooled twin-parallel engine. The motor produces 42 BHP and 29.6 Nm of peak torque, with a 6-speed gearbox. At the time of the launch, it will already be BS-6 compliant.

For suspension purposes, it now uses 37mm USD forks at the front and a preload-adjustable at the back. But in India, we will get telescopic forks at the front, because of the cost-cutting process.

Yamaha MT-03 will come with front and rear disc brakes with dual-channel ABS as standard. Just like the new R3, MT-03 could also get R15’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system.

Features onboard will include an analogue-digital cluster, oil change indicator, ABS as standard fitment, LED position lights, LED taillight and split seats. The seating setup is similarly found on R15 V3 and R3.

The pricing expectations for the MT-03 is between Rs 3-3.5 Lakhs. Currently, R3 is priced at Rs 3.49 Lakhs (ex-showroom prices). It will compete with the likes of KTM Duke 390, BMW G 310 R, Royal Enfield 650 Twins and Honda CB300R.
