As the alliance between Jaguar and BMW extends, they are going from sharing engines to even sharing platforms for many of the future Jaguar Land Rover models.

We had earlier reported that Jaguar is working on two new baby SUVs that would be revenue generators for the brand. The latest development in that regard is that these Jaguar SUVs could ultimately be build on BMW platforms as part of the growing ties between these two manufacturers. The deal between these two companies started out for the joint development of Electronic Drive Unit (EDU) for electric vehicles.

Later, it was also said that BMW would be supplying Jaguar Land Rover with four and six-cylinder internal combustion engines in both standard and hybrid forms. That move of sharing engines between JLR and BMW has opened up much possibilities for them to share an advanced small-car platform amongst themselves.

The baby Jaguars are already in their early stages of development and are waiting to receive the green signal for production in the middle of the next decade. These vehicles could now be based on BMWโ€™s new FAAR platform for front-wheel-drive cars that was first previewed by the new BMW 1-series. These two baby Jaguars will most likely be small coupe crossovers that will carry the ‘Pace’ name as part of their brand’s SUV family.

As the alliance between these two brands deepen, there is a possibility that the next-generation Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport models – which are due in the next half of the next decade – will be siblings of the next-generation Mini Countryman and BMW X1 models if there’s a further deepening of the alliance.

According to a report by Autocar India, this expansion of platform sharing could also open the way for JLR to build the long-rumoured entry-level Land Rover model which could revive the ‘Freelander’ name.
