Anand Mahindra on Scorpio

The latest tweet by Anand Mahindra reads, “Iโ€™m sure you havenโ€™t forgotten how we were in Nashik together to road test the prototype @hormazdsorabjee Phew, weโ€™ve come a long way since then! But this trusty warhorse has always been at our side, ready to ride into battle with us. If it had flopped, the board would have fired me. So I owe my career to it!” He is talking to the Autocar Editor Hormazd Sorabjee. This is when the latter posted on the occasion of the iconic Scorpio reaching an unbelievable 9,00,000 sales milestone. Anand mentions that he would’ve been dismissed by Mahindra Group had the Scorpio not succeeded.

The legendary SUV was incepted by Pawan Goenka who had previously worked in the R&D division of General Motors in Detroit. He suggested that Mahindra build a brand-new product from scratch rather than license an existing product. That led to the creation of Scorpio, which, at the time, retailed for Rs 5.5 lakh. And rest, as they say, is history. Today, Mahindra offers the SUV in two variants – Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N. The former retains the veteran SUV in all its glory while the latter represents the brand’s future with the latest tech and convenience features and an upmarket feel.

What We Think

We know how iconic the Mahindra Scorpio is in India. It has been around for over 2 decades now. Over the years, customers have used it for various purposes including as a family car, goods carrier, people mover, commercial vehicle and more. In fact, there have been pickup iterations of the Scorpio in the form of the Getaway as well. It has succeeded in all roles which led to people trusting the vehicle completely. It is that trust that we witness even today when the demand for the new Scorpio N is unprecedented and the carmaker is struggling to bring the waiting times down.
