Mahindra XUV700 vs KGM Ssangyong Torres Comparison

The Australian market is full of enticing SUVs, but these two bear a distinction of being immensely affordable

In this post, we take a look at an Australian expert who compares the Mahindra XUV700 and the KGM Ssangyong Torres. The Indian auto giant has been doing quite well Down Under with its latest breed of vehicles like the XUV700 and Scorpio N. Until now, it used to offer the utilitarian pickup truck (Ute). However, the latest SUVs certainly took the experts and customers by surprise in a positive manner. On the other hand, the Ssangyong is also a great product for all those who want to buy a value-for-money product.

The specifics of this case stem from carsales.com.au on YouTube. The expert starts from the outside. He feels that the Mahindra XUV700 is a decent looking SUV with the striking LED DRLs and headlamps up front, more comfortable 18-inch black painted alloy wheels on the side, flush-fitting door handles, and sharp LED taillamps at the rear. On the other hand, the KGM Ssangyong Torres looks slightly overcomplicated in terms of design but could appeal to young buyers who want a bit more flashy product. Overall, both these SUVs have their distinct characteristics.

On the inside, things are quite distinguishing. The host mentions that the overall cabin materials and amenities in the Mahindra XUV700 definitely feel better than the KGM Ssangyong Torres. It gets wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual 10.25-inch displays (one for the infotainment and one for driver’s instrument cluster), ADAS, storage spaces, comfortable rear seats, USB-C sockets, practical third row of seating and an impressive Sony music system. On the other hand, the Torres also gets most amenities but has larger screens and powered front seats along with seat heating and cooling function. However, due to the addition of a third row, the XUV700 is the most practical of the two.

Specs Comparison

There is a noticeable gap between the engine configurations of the two SUVs. The Mahindra XUV700 comes with a peppy 2.0-litre mStallion direct injection turbo petrol engine which generates a healthy 149.2 kW (200 hp) and 380 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This mill pairs with a 6-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the KGM Ssangyong Torres possesses a downsized 1.5-litre turbo petrol mill which makes 120 kW (161 hp) and 280 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. It also boasts a 6-speed automatic gearbox but sends power to all four wheels. In terms of fuel efficiency, the real-world figures in this test were similar at 9.8 litres per 100 km.

Specs Comparison

Overall, the driving characteristics of the Mahindra XUV700 were better according to the host. This includes the suspension’s performance, the peppy engine and smooth gear shifts. Also, the light steering is a boon for urban conditions even though it can make you feel a bit less confident on the highways at high speeds. Apart from that, the larger engine demonstrates better performance while overtaking at high speeds. On the other hand, the Torres feels like it has enough grunt to take on the city commutes. However, the lesser power surfaces on open stretches of road. Also, you can also feel more bumps entering the cabin due to bigger tyres. All in all, the host declared the Mahindra XUV700 the better of the two.
