Bajaj-Chetak

As the Bajaj Chetak completes its electric yatra across 3500 km through India, Bajaj has revealed further details about sales, service and a three year/50,000 km warranty for the Chetak.

Bajaj created headlines last month by unveiling the all-new electric Chetak last month. After its unveil, the Chetak embarked on an electric yatra across 10 cities and 3500 km across India, in a bid to show its resilience and reliability as an electric vehicle. Bajaj recently concluded the electric yatra as the Chetaks made their way back to Pune last week. Bajaj announced some more details on the sales, service, production and pricing of the Chetak, also revealing its warranty of 3 years or 50,000 km as standard.

The electric yatra saw 20 Bajaj Chetaks make their way across india, travelling 3500 km. Bajaj claims that the battery life of the lithium-ion units on the Chetak is about 70,000 km, and has been tested across different weather conditions, terrains, road surfaces and more.

The warranty Bajaj is providing for the Chetak is one of the longer warranty tenures in the industry of electric two-wheelers. In comparison, Revolt Intellicorp provides the longest warranty period of five years or 75,000 km, along with free maintenance benefits up to three years or 30,000 km and a battery warranty of up to eight years or 1.5 lakh km.ย Bajaj’s warranty plan is more comparable with that of Ather Energy who offers a three years/unlimited km warranty, with battery life of up to 50,000 km. The Ather 450 comes with a two year warranty period.

Bajaj has also revealed that the Chetak would be manufactured at the brand’s Chakan facility in Maharashtra where it gets an all-female workforce on the assembly line. The electric scooter however will have a relatively smaller assembly line in comparison to Bajaj’s conventional offerings, considering EV have fewer moving parts.

Rajiv Bajaj, MD – Bajaj Auto, has said that the company is in a position to ramp up production, should there be such demand. The Bajaj Chetak will also be exported to other markets and the modular platform underpinning the electric scooter could also find its way on models from KTM and Husqvarna. This makes us look forward to faster and more European looking electric scooter that could eventually make it to the market.

As for the Chetak itself, it comes with single-sided suspension, LED headlamp with DRL, illuminated switchgear, glovebox, retractable hook, 12-inch alloy wheels, front disc brake, and more. The battery can be charged up to 80 per cent in five hours, but does not come with fast charging. Bajaj will first launch the Chetak in Pune in January next year and prices are expected to be in the range of Rs. 1-1.5 lakhs. Sales in other cities will open in a phased manner and this includes Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi among others.
